The Limes thermal baths are a thermal bath in Aalen ( Baden-Württemberg ). The 1985 opened baths were in Roman - antique built in style and are located on a hillside south-west above the city center in Won Heuchelbach.

history

The idea of looking for thermal water on the slope of Langert am Albtrauf above Aalen goes back to research by geologist Eugen Seibold in 1948 on the course of the Swabian lineament in this area. On the initiative of Aalen city treasurer Eduard Obermayer from 1977 onwards, the Aalen municipal council decided unanimously to carry out test drillings on a plot of land on the Osterbucher Steige , which the city bought for this purpose , for 500,000 marks (today, inflation-adjusted approx. 619,600 euros) . The drilling then took place from the end of 1979 and, after a five-month drilling period, encountered thermal water in March 1980.

As a result, a provisional, uncovered swimming pool was built on the Osterbucher Steige , and at the same time the construction of the thermal baths around 700 meters from the source was commissioned. For this purpose, a design by the architect Rudolf Wienands was chosen, which based the bath on the style of ancient Roman baths, alluding to Aalen's Roman past and the location near the Limes . After the groundbreaking in 1983, the Limes thermal baths were inaugurated on April 19, 1985.

The construction costs of the Limes thermal baths totaled 28 million marks (today, adjusted for inflation, this corresponds to approx. 30,790,000 euros). The financing took place partly through the issue of company shares in the Limes thermal baths for 2,000 marks each, with which citizens could participate as limited partners . The city of Aalen actively promoted this among its residents. In this way a total of six million marks of the financing came about. The city of Aalen also contributed directly with six million marks and the Federal Republic of Germany with two million marks, the rest of the financing came from a loan from the savings bank .

In 1992 the operation of the Limes thermal baths was transferred to the Stadtwerke Aalen.

In 1993 a hotel complex was built adjacent to the Limes thermal baths. The hotel has its own access to the swimming pool.

The Limes thermal baths recorded the largest number of visitors in 2000 with more than 344,000 guests. In 2019, a total of around 262,000 guests visited the thermal bath.

The pool has five pools with 34 to 36 ° C thermal water . The large, circular movement pool inside the thermal bath covers 209 m 2 and has a water temperature of 34 ° C. The rectangular outdoor pool (35 ° C) is surrounded by Roman-style columns and is 99 m 2 in size. The 99 m 2 therapy pool (34 ° C) is the Roman heart of the facility. Basically round with flat, step-shaped bulges, framed in columns under a dark blue vaulted ceiling with stars, bathers can enjoy a classic Roman ambience. This pool is closed to public bathing at regular intervals for therapeutic purposes. Another therapy pool (26 m 2 , 34 ° C) is permanently reserved for therapy. The warm grotto basin with 25 m 2 and 36 ° C water temperature is shaped as a semicircle and offers benches for relaxation in the water. You can cool off in cold water in the basin next to it with an area of around 2 m 2 .

All pools are a maximum of 1.30 m deep and have massage jets with 1.5 bar. Small fountains, waterfalls and other water features are housed in almost all pools.

The bathroom includes a sauna complex with four different sauna types. There is a Roman-Irish steam bath , a sweat room, a Finnish log cabin sauna and a panorama sauna.

Further components of the facility are a Kneipp facility , an outdoor area with loungers, a relaxation room and an attached restaurant and café .

Characteristic of the thermal water

The water was discovered in 1980 when drilling the Swabian Lineament , a 140 km long layer fault on the edge of the Swabian Alb , at a depth of 650 meters. This state-approved medicinal water is a fluoride- containing calcium - sodium - sulphate thermal bath with mineral water . The mineralization is 3600 mg / l. The temperature at the well outlet is 36.4 ° C. Of the discharge of 12 liters per second (around 43 m 3 per hour), 9.5 m 3 per hour are pumped out of the well. The water comes from the last ice age and is around 12,000 to 14,000 years old, so it is largely unaffected by pollution .
