planned route of the Linha Amarela to Rato-Odivelas

The Linha Verde (also called Linha da Caravela ) is one of the four subway lines of the Lisbon Metro network . With a length of 9 kilometers, it is the shortest line and serves 13 stations. It is shown in green on the network plan.

history

The first station on the network was Rossio , which opened in 1963 when the Y-shaped network, opened in 1959, was extended from the neighboring Restauradores to Rossio. It was planned that the southern branch should be led back north in a U-shaped curve. On September 28, 1966, the line between Rossio and Anjos with the stops Soccoro (since 1998 Martim Moniz ) and Intendente went into operation. Six years later, on June 18, 1972, the Anjos – Alvalade section was opened to traffic.

The expansion plan for the metro, published in 1990, was intended to link the two branches of the route, which previously ended in Alvalade and Cidade Universitária , in 1993 in a new Campo Grande station . Since the network would have encompassed a circular line with a protruding branch to Sete Rios, a line reform was carried out. The route Campo Grande-Alameda-Rossio-Sete Rios became Linha Azul , the route from Campo Grande to Rotunda became Linha Vermelha . After Lisbon was awarded the contract for the 1998 World Exhibition , in addition to the construction of the Linha Vermelha, which was to connect to the Linha Verde in Alameda , the plan was to restructure the entire network in the expansion plan called Plano de Expansão da Rede 1999 . The two terminal stations on the banks of the Tejo, Cais do Sodré and Santa Apolónia , were to be connected to the subway network. So it was decided to split the previous Linha Azul into two separate lines: the western branch is to be run as Linha Azul via the Terreiro do Paço ferry terminal to Santa Apolónia, the eastern branch as Linha Verde to Cais do Sodré. A connection between the two lines was created at the newly built Baixa-Chiado transfer station . On April 18, 1998, the extension to Cais do Sodré was put into operation continuously. The blue counterpart went into operation on August 8, 1998 to Baixa-Chiado and only in 2007 to Santa Apolónia. The route Restauradores – Rossio is now only used for transfer trips. In 2002 the Linha Verde from Campo Grande was extended by one station to Telheiras . Numerous stations have already been rebuilt in the past, and the rest of them are scheduled for rebuilding in the near future. The platforms are to be extended for the guidance of six-car trains and the stations themselves are to be equipped with lifts so that they are barrier-free .

connections

Subway

The Linha Verde is linked to every other line of the subway network: In Campo Grande with the Linha Amarela, in Alameda with the Linha Vermelha and in Baixa-Chiado with the Linha Azul.

Other means of transport

In addition to buses that leave from almost every station, Linha Verde also has more or less direct transfer options to the tram at the Cais do Sodré, Baixa-Chiado, Rossio, Martim Moniz and Intendente stations . The stops Cais do Sodré, Roma and Areeiro offer transfer options to the train, Cais do Sodré also to ferries of the Transtejo & Soflusa .

future

The expansion projects for the Lisbon Metro up to 2020

Extension to Pontinha

An extension to the existing Pontinha station of Linha Azul is planned in a northerly direction , but the implementation is uncertain after most of the extension projects of the Lisbon Metro have been postponed. This extension would include three new stations: Fernando Namora , Senhora da Luz and Padre Cruz . This new route could also be used by the Linha Vermelha if its extension from Aeroporto to Campo Grande were built.

New Madrid stop

A new Madrid stop is to be built between the existing Roma and Areeiro stops . The station would be located directly at the Roma-Areeiro train station of the Linha de Cintura and would have direct connections to it. Although the Roma and Areeiro stations serve as a connection to the train station, the access routes are quite long: for Roma the walk is 220 meters, for Areeiro even 500 meters.

Ring line

The Linha Verde could even be run as a ring line in the medium term. The Linha Amarela is to be extended in the medium to long term from Rato to Cais do Sodré, so that a continuous circle of rails is created over Campo Grande. According to the plans, the Linha Verde will then drive the Campo Grande-Rato section together with the Linha Amarela or even alone, then take over the planned branch to Cais do Sodré alone. The Campo Grande – Telheiras – Pontinha route would be taken over by the Linha Vermelha, which is to lead to Amadora.
