List of parks in Cologne

Once the largest cities in Germany , the medieval city of Cologne already had many agriculturally used areas within its historic city walls due to the then strongly flourishing wine business , which was mainly in the Cologne vineyards of that time . In the course of the steadily densifying city due to the steadily advancing development in the late modern era , these inner-city green spaces gradually disappeared.

Only with the so-called laying down of the walls - i.e. the demolition of the historic city walls - does the construction of the now often greened ring roads such as B. the so-called " Cologne rings " and the simultaneous creation of illuminated streets also the emergence of green inner-city squares as attractive green islands in the city. A striking example of this is today's Rathenauplatz in Neustadt-Süd . Ultimately, however, it was only the almost complete conversion of the medieval city walls into a planned system of green spaces in the now industrialized city that again significantly larger areas with larger green spaces were achieved.

This systematically planned system of green spaces is still being meticulously developed today. So z. B. the urban planning designed radials , as z. B. is also given in the Lindenthal Canal , even after the current urban development project in the context of the so-called Regionale 2010, to some extent beyond the outer green belt . For this new planning area, based on the historical plans of the two already existing Cologne green belts, initially only the concept of the so-called third green belt (s) has been developed. This future planning area essentially comprises areas of the Rhineland Nature Park in the region in large parts . Analogous to the so-called master plan for Cologne designed by the renowned architect Albert Speer junior in 2008, the maintenance and restoration of the Cologne green system was again significantly advanced in 2012 with the participation of other well-known landscape architects and of course the city of Cologne itself. Under the project name Green Belt: Impulse 2012 , a general plan for the renovation of the entire green system was tackled in addition to the expansion of the green areas, which is now to be specifically developed and implemented with appropriate citizen participation.

Since the city of Cologne - as is often the case in other cities - unfortunately can no longer carry out the always laborious maintenance of the green areas in a desirable or suitable form, individual and in particular more important parks or Green spaces Citizens' initiatives have been set up that are committed to the continued preservation and, to a significant extent, of the ongoing maintenance of the parks. The most important and, in particular, overarching initiatives are: Examples include the local group for Cologne of the Rhenish Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection and the Cologne Green Foundation .
