Ensembles in Neuburg
Ensemble Upper City
File number: E-1-85-149-1
The core of the ensemble, which also includes the inner parts of the two suburbs, the lower one around Luitpoldstrasse, the upper one around Wolfgang-Wilhelm-Platz as well as Elisenbrücke and Leopoldineninsel, is the Upper City. It extends over the entire Jura ridge, which towers 20 m above the Danube. The backbone and organizing axis of the city plan in this core area is Amalienstraße. It lies from W to E, from the upper to the lower gate, over the crest of the hill, the western tip of which it reaches in a short, steep climb from the south. In its northeastern part, including Karlsplatz and the southern side streets, the fortified Agilolfing “Civitas nova”, a market settlement of the 7th century, can be seen, which was preceded by Celtic and Roman settlement and fortifications.
The Castell Venaxamodurum of the late imperial era was located on the western tip of the city hill in the area of today's Münz. In 1002 , Duke Heinrich IV of Bavaria (as King Heinrich II of Germany ) founded a Benedictine monastery on the site of the later court church , which also served as a parish church for the civitas. The Provincial Library on Karlsplatz was preceded by a Romanesque St. Martin's Church. On the western part of Amalienstraße, St. Peter has been the oldest parish church in Neuburg since the 7th century. (In the second half of the 8th century it was the diocesan seat of a short-lived Agilolfing diocese of Neuburg.) To the south, in Münz, the marshals of Kalendin, as royal burgraves, built a city castle from the 12th century, and the Wittelsbachers as city lords built it from 1247 Plant off. The entire area of the western upper town was not fully settled and fortified until the early 15th century.
The heyday of Neuburg, through which the image of the upper city was re-shaped, began in 1503 with the installation of a principality of Pfalz-Neuburg and the expansion of the city into a residence. The new princely palace of Count Palatine Ottheinrich on the north-eastern edge of the city hill gave rise to the new urban construction heavyweight that is still in effect today. Court buildings, court church, former Jesuit college, stately aristocratic and court officials' houses from the 16th and 17th centuries in the Amaliengasse and the parallel Herrengasse have since determined the physiognomy of the upper town. Late baroque designs are almost completely missing, as Neuburg lost its residence function in 1685.
The inner part of the lower suburb on Luitpoldstrasse is determined by the old north-south traffic route at the foot of the city hill and by the Danube crossing. At this unprotected but easily accessible place, at the current post office in Luitpoldstrasse, there was also the Agilolfingian ducal and later royal court. After Neuburg's business life shifted mainly from the upper town to the lower suburbs in the early 19th century, a number of representative buildings were built on the main street there, Luitpoldstraße, which stand out from the lower buildings on the side streets to the east.
The upper suburb around Wolfgang-Wilhelm-Platz accommodated one of the large counter-Reformation monasteries in Neuburg, the Ursuline monastery (seminary since 1816). Town houses and some aristocratic palaces are arranged around this complex in front of the upper gate; the whole area differs significantly from the subsequent urban extensions of the 19th century to the south.
Ensemble Bahnhofstrasse
File number: E-1-85-149-2
The layout of the street goes back to the late Roman period. The road led from the fort on the western tip of the city hill over the broken Feldkirchener Tor to Feldkirchen. A wide suburban street laid out in this form in the last quarter of the 19th century with planting to the side, aiming at the station building. Loose buildings on both sides with villas in historicizing style, with gardens in between.

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
