The veneration of the Mother of God under the attribute Mater ecclesiae , Mother of the Church , goes back to the 4th century. The dogmatic constitution of the Second Vatican Council on the Church Lumen Gentium confirmed this statement in 1964 by the magisterium. Therefore churches with this patronage are often modern ones .

In addition to the Roman Catholic Church , Mary is venerated as Mother of the Church in the Orthodox Churches .
