List of cultural monuments in Germany

In Germany there are numerous cultural assets under monument protection are provided. The monument authorities , preservationists and owners are responsible for the protection , which is mainly regulated by the respective monument protection laws (DSchG) of the individual federal states .

Overview by country

The countries use different names. While some countries generally refer to all protected objects as cultural monuments , other countries differentiate, for example, between architectural monuments and ground monuments (archaeological monuments). Other terms used for different types of cultural monuments include garden monument , small monument , hall monument and others.

In some federal states, listed objects are identified by attaching a monument plaque. In the GDR, a symbol was used for this purpose, which was modeled on the emblem of the cultural property protected under the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and is therefore misleading. The East German states continue to use this symbol to mark their cultural monuments. Some western German states also use similar symbols. Lower Saxony only gave up a similar symbol in 2018 and has since used its state coat of arms on the memorial plaque.
