Correctional facility (originally a castle, later a palace), core system consisting of four prison buildings grouped around a courtyard (with equipment, including an organ), courtyard with benches, whip lamp and tree, north of the core system farm buildings (with a former laundry and infirmary), around the Enclosure wall, two watchtowers on it (in the west and north of the complex), to the east of the wall adjoining the guard building, next to it a gate, to the north opposite the officials' residence, adjoining it a porter building An der Stalburg 6
(map)
First mentioned in 1244 (castle) Building that characterizes the townscape, opened as a penal institution in 1864, essentially a medieval castle complex, nationwide significant testimony to the history of the judiciary and the history of the GDR, as well as architectural and landscape significance.

Former Prison, supra-regionally significant testimony to the history of the judiciary and the history of the GDR, in addition to architectural and landscape significance due to the mountain location.
The "Stalburg" was first mentioned in a document in 1244 and was the seat of the Main Franconian burgraves Starkenberg, burned down in 1602, decay during the Thirty Years' War, not rebuilt until 1812–1815 as a castle and seat of the Rent Office and Justice Office, medieval structural remains are suspected. In 1862 the castle was demolished and the western part and the western half of the north wing of the “women's prison” were built. Between 1885 and 1888, the south wing, the east wing and the eastern half of the north wing, as well as most of the farm building north of the four-wing complex, were built in the course of the conversion to a male penal institution. Also contemporary is the 415 m long and 4 m - 7 m high brick wall with broken glass, which completely surrounds the complex and integrates two watchtowers (20th century).
The west wing of the four-wing complex is a five-storey gray-brown plastered building on a mighty base, on the narrow sides dominant stepped gables, on the long outer side three central projections also with stepped gables, arch style below, 2nd floor with straight lintels, the upper three floors with small prison windows, only interrupted from the large arched windows on both sides, which mark the hall (above iron roof truss!). Here on a gallery defective organ from Kircheisen (Dresden), around 1870.
North wing Facade like the west wing, but one storey less. The construction of 1862 is followed by that of 1885–1888. A largely flat GDR extension including a lift is in front of the entire site.
The south wing from 1885 is the most authentic part of the prison. The facade of the four-storey red brick building has segmental arch openings, but the windows behind the brick shell still have natural stone walls with a straight lintel. On the outside, two chimneys placed in front of the wall contribute to the structure of the facade in the sense of a colossal order. The gables are also stepped here. The large light opening in the gable roof illuminated the remarkable four-story staircase with wrought-iron railings from which the cells extend. During the GDR era, this light opening was blocked by adding an “attic”. On the south wing, a partially plastered campanile with a clock and a pyramidal helmet.
The east wing (administration building) from 1885 to 1888, three-story red brick building with a stepped gable and segment arch openings accented by yellow bricks. New slate covering, keeping the small standing dormers.
Farm building (N) inside the old wall. In the style and material of the other buildings of the 1880s, but changed somewhat more, the laundry (O), the middle (1927) and western part included the infirmary. To the east of the old facility entrance situation with gatekeeper building (extended flat roof, piloti) from 1964 and high gate, NW of the gatekeeper building is the former civil servant's house from 1928 (later administration, home style with turrets, balconies, ornamental framework, slate foot hips), guard building from 1930, next to it the second gate, flat clinker building influenced by a new objectivity.
Until recently, Hoheneck was associated with political persecution: resistance fighters sat here in the Third Reich, and after 1949, alongside criminals, victims of the GDR regime sat here. In the 1970s / 1980s, Hoheneck was a women's prison for prison sentences ranging from three years to life and as such a counterpart to the “yellow misery” in Bautzen, where mostly men were held. Numerous details from this period can still be found inside the building and some of them are documented on tablets.
In the south wing original cell doors and grilles, peepholes, stickers of the last period of use, in the basement so-called water cell and dark cell, used until 1983. In this context, the inner courtyard of the four-wing complex is also significant, as it still shows the situation during the prison period: in the center there is a multi-part whip lamp from the GDR period, a pedestal with a guardhouse, several benches and a tree. To the south wing there is still a barrier that should prevent contact with the occupants.
The facility was used as a prison until 2001, and the two large metal gates and the NATO barbed wire in the entrance area date back to the time after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In the 20th century, several buildings were built outside the old wall, such as the guard house in 1930, a porter's building in 1964, and the civil servants' residence around 1910/1928.
The culture house from 1955 has since been torn down. This was built for both staff of the institution and residents of the district (cinema, youth consecration). It had forms of the “national cultural heritage” as well as influences of international modernity (proportions, wall swings) and a stage inside.
Also demolished on the south side of the outer gate as a structural remnant of the palace complex before 1862, a multi-storey residential farm building around 1850.

The buildings and objects under protection in detail:

West wing of the core complex : five-storey plastered building on a mighty base, 1862, gray-brown plaster, on the narrow sides dominant stepped gables, on the outer long side three central projections also dominated by the narrow sides, on the outer long side three central projections also with stepped gables, arch style below, 2nd upper floor with straight lintels, the upper three floors with small prison windows, interrupted only by the large arched windows on both sides, which mark the hall (iron roof truss above!). Here on a gallery a defective organ from Kircheisen (Dresden), around 1870. In the wing several murals by trainees.

North wing of the nuclear facility : facade like the west wing, but one storey less. The construction of 1862 followed that of 1885-1888. A largely flat GDR extension including a lift is in front of the entire site.

The “south wing” from 1885 is the most authentic part of the prison. During the GDR era, this light opening was blocked by adding an “attic” - a sign of overcrowding. Original cell doors and bars, peepholes, stickers of the last period of use, floor plans almost unchanged, so-called water cell and dark cell in the basement, used until 1983.

In the style and material of the other buildings of the 1880s, but with a slightly higher degree of change, the laundry (O), the middle (1927) and western part included the infirmary.

The approximately 4 m high brick wall surrounds the four-wing complex and the so-called farm building, as well as the remains of a greenhouse and a bath in the southwest. On the wall there are two watchtowers, also made of red bricks, but from the 20th century.

To the east of the old complex, entrance situation with porter building (extended flat roof, pilotis) from 1964, high gate (gate probably broken off in 2012), decided by a three-storey residential and farm building (residential and farm building demolished in 2012) with natural stone window walls and mixed masonry, flat saddle roof, rural Architectural style around 1850 - presumably the rest of the development from the time before the establishment of the prison (Stammgut), northwest of the porter's building is the former official residence, home style of the 1920s, turrets, balconies, ornamental frameworks, slate foot hips etc., doors inside are still strong influenced by Art Nouveau. Verifiable construction date 1928, design language partly from the period 1905-1910. In the 1960s administration, but also visitor rooms, child care, rooms for the Stasi and cells.

Guard building from 1930, on it the second gate (designed like the other one), flat clinker brick building influenced by a new objectivity.

southwest of the nuclear facility remains of a greenhouse and an outdoor swimming pool - both demolished before 2015
