List of National Natural Landmarks in Colorado

This is a list of the National Natural Landmarks in Colorado . There are 15 National Natural Landmark properties in Colorado (as of 2020). They were established between 1965 and 1984 and between 2011 and 2016. 14 National Natural Landmarks are located entirely in the state of Colorado, another property is mostly in Wyoming , but extends into Colorado.

3 Garden Park Fossil Area Felch Quarry 1973 38 ° 34 '24 "  N , 105 ° 13' 31"  W. Fremont Federation Internationally renowned paleontological site known for fossils of dinosaurs, fish, crocodiles, turtles and mammals. Located on the Bureau of Land Management's land .
4th Hanging Lake Hanging Lake 2011 39 ° 36 '5.9 "  N , 107 ° 11' 31.2"  W. Garfield Federation A lake formed by travertine deposits with extensive hanging vegetation and minimal human intervention, unique in the region. Part of the White River National Forest .
5 Indian Springs Trace Fossil Indian Springs Trace Fossil Site.jpg 1979 38 ° 29 '35.3 "  N , 105 ° 7' 56.9"  W. Fremont Private Best North American site for animal trace fossils from the Ordovician .
6th Lost Creek Scenic Area Lost Creek Wilderness in August 2013.jpg 1966 39 ° 16 ′ 7 ″  N , 105 ° 28 ′ 5 ″  W. Park , Jefferson Federation Located in the Pike National Forest , with extensive rock formations including canyons, ridges, crags and streams that meander above and below ground.
7th Morrison-Golden Fossil Areas Dinosaur Ridge tracks.JPG 1973 39 ° 40 ′ 32.5 "  N , 105 ° 11 ′ 36.2"  W. Jefferson County, private Site of great palaeontological importance, unique for fossil footprints of reptiles, birds and mammals. The site was expanded in 2011 to include the 7.69 hectare Prehistoric Preserve in the city of Golden .
8th Raton Mesa Fishers peak.jpg 1967 37 ° 2 ′ 0 ″  N , 104 ° 24 ′ 0 ″  W. Las Animas State, private Protected by a thick layer of lava, Raton Mesa has withstood the extensive erosion and weathering that has impacted the surrounding areas, creating an extreme contrast in the landscape.
9 Roxborough State Park Roxborough.jpg 1980 39 ° 25 ′ 47 "  N , 105 ° 4 ′ 9"  W. Douglas Country The site shows typical sedimentary layers of the Front Range as well as the erosion of the sandstone of the Fountain Formation in unusual patterns, there are extensive fossil remains and unusual plant populations.

Saguache Confederation, private Colorado's biggest remaining ball ledges -Sumpfland, now rare in the southern Rocky Mountains. Provides habitat for extensive flora and fauna, especially for water birds.
11 Sand Creek Sand Creek NNL.jpg 1984 40 ° 59 ′ 49 ″  N , 105 ° 46 ′ 14 ″  W. Larimer Federal, state, private Partly located in Wyoming, the site is one of the most impressive occurrences of oblique sandstone in North America. Also a place of paleontological and biological importance.
12 Slumgullion Earthflow SLUMGULLION EARTHFLOW, HINSDALE COUNTY, M COLORADO.jpg 1965 37 ° 59 ′ 30 ″  N , 107 ° 15 ′ 25 ″  W. Hinsdale Confederation, private An important example of the geological process of mass movement : a great flow of volcanic rock migrated from mountain to valley and formed Lake San Cristobal . The same process repeats itself and slowly obscures the existing stream. Located on the grounds of the Bureau of Land Management.
13 Spanish peaks Spanish Peaks.JPG 1976 37 ° 22 ′ 48 ″  N , 105 ° 0 ′ 0 ″  W. Huerfano , Las Animas Confederation, private In the San Isabel National Forest located site is an exceptional example of over 500 dikes of igneous rock . They were created when molten igneous rock was pressed into a fault before hardening .
14th Summit Lake 2006-07-16 Summit Lake Park Colorado.jpg 1965 39 ° 35 ′ 55 "  N , 105 ° 38 ′ 39"  W. Clear Creek communal At nearly 4,000 m, the area contains an excellent example of alpine tundra in the contiguous US states. Some of the plants that survive in this microclimate are usually only found in the Arctic Circle .
15th West Bijou Site 2016 39 ° 39 ′ 21.7 "  N , 104 ° 44 ′ 13.2"  W. Arapahoe Private As part of the Plains Conservation Center , the site contains fossil and mineral evidence detailing the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary , the most recent mass extinction on Earth.
