The list of cities in El Salvador provides an overview of the development of the population of the larger cities and municipalities of the Central American state of El Salvador .

Urban settlements by population

By far the largest agglomeration in El Salvador is San Salvador with a population of 1,566,629 (2007). This means that 27 percent of the country's population is concentrated in the capital region.

The following table contains the urban settlements with more than 10,000 inhabitants as well as the results of the censuses (VZ) of September 27, 1992 and May 12, 2007. The department to which the city belongs is also listed. The population figures relate to the respective urban settlement in the narrower sense - the geographical urban area - not to the city or municipality in the political sense.

Municipalities by population

In El Salvador there are 267 municipalities ( municipios ). The communities - the largest is Metapán with 668.36 square kilometers - usually consist of several localities. The administrative area often includes both the central, mostly urban settlement that gives it its name, as well as the surrounding greater region, i.e. extensive rural areas.

The following table contains the communes with more than 30,000 inhabitants and the results of the censuses (VZ) of September 27, 1992 and May 12, 2007. The department to which the commune belongs is also listed. The population figures refer to the respective municipality within its political limits, without politically independent suburbs.
