If possible, a picture of the respective street sign is attached to each street, which also serves as evidence of the current street name. The list is sorted alphabetically, spaces and special characters were ignored when sorting. The initial "Sch-" was assigned to the letter "S". Street names that begin with "Ä", "Ö" or "Ü" etc. do not yet exist, but would be assigned to "A", "O" and "U" if necessary. The umlauts were not resolved to "ae", "oe" and "ue" in alphabetical sorting, but were treated as "a", "o" and "u" during sorting. Due to the growth of the city, the list cannot claim to be exhaustive.

Due to the number of streets in Flensburg and for reasons of clarity, the list is divided into alphabetical sub-lists.

history

The history of the city of Flensburg begins around the middle of the 12th century (see also: Adelby ). Flensburg received its town charter in 1284. The first streets and their names are known from various old documents and maps. At first the houses in Flensburg had no numbers. The first numbering took place in 1766. The town hall on Thingplatz received number one . All houses were numbered consecutively so that no number was duplicated and a street name was necessary. Starting from the town hall, the numbering was initially in the direction of St. Marien . Next came the numbering of the districts of St. Nikolai and St. Johannis . Flensburg's first address book was published in 1847. In 1881 the addresses of the city were changed and the houses were numbered per street. The old house numbers have been preserved on the buildings Kompagniestraße 4 (former home of the bailiff of St. Marien) and Große Straße 16 (former Löwen-Apotheke). Questionable renaming from the time of National Socialism , for example that of Burgplatz in Schlageterplatz , was repealed in May 1945 by Lord Mayor I. C. Möller, who was appointed by the British military government.

Special name components

Some settlement areas in the city as well as the surrounding area end with the suffix -by , which generally indicates a larger settlement, for example Adelby . These designations can therefore also be found in street names, for example at Adelbyer Kirchenweg . Other words end with the suffix -toft , which can usually be transferred with "Feld". Examples are Munketoft or Hestoft . Toft is an enclosed field (or parcel ) on which there is a farm located away from the village or settlement . The word gap , which denotes a paddock , a fenced field (or parcel), has a similar meaning in the street names of Flensburg . An example is the small gap at Twedter Plack or the Exe , which was previously called Ratsherrenlücke or Ratsherrenkoppel. With “Lund”, as in Adelbylund , for example , a grove or forest is always meant. The ending -holz also refers to a wood and -damm often to a pond or reservoir. Other street names end with -stieg , which means a steep path . Examples are the Jungfernstieg near the Hafermarkt or the Försterstieg in the Weiche district . Some names contain the four cardinal points in the form of the prefixes Norder- , Süder- , Wester- and Oster- , whereby Oster is not pronounced like the cardinal direction "East", but like " Easter ", only without the "n" am Enough.
