- Maria Volkonskaja (1806–1863), wife of the Decembrist Sergei Volkonsky and great-granddaughter of the great scholar Mikhail Lomonossow ; lived in Irkutsk from 1837. As the wife of an exile, she was not allowed to show herself in public places and so her house developed into a center of cultural and social life in Irkutsk, where she also founded an orphanage.
