Locas in Love ( spelling Locas In Love ) is a German band from Cologne . They are named after a comic series by Jaime Hernandez and Gilbert Hernandez . Their music cannot be assigned to any particular style, but shows influences from Noisefolk, Krautrock , Indie Rock and also classic singer-songwriters .

history

Björn Sonnenberg and Stefanie Knie founded Locas in Love in the spring of 2001, initially as an offshoot of Sonnenberg's former school band The Dackel 5, and Jan Niklas Jansen joined the group in December. The three are the only constant members, from 2004 to 2008 Maurizio Arca added to the cast as drummer, he was replaced by Christian Schneider (also at grafzahl ) until 2011, followed by the current drummer Saskia von Klitzing ( Fehlfarben , FM Einheit , Carpathian dog ). The artwork of all the sound carriers and other Locas In Love articles has always been designed by bassist Stefanie cabinet. Locas In Love have already appeared on stage with Nikki Sudden , Okkervil River , Jayhawks , Xiu Xiu , Arab Strap , Timesbold , Superpunk , Aeronauts and others. They keep an online diary of almost all concerts on their website, in which they document the everyday life of a touring band. At The National's only concert in Germany in May 2007, these Locas In Love invited them as a “special guest” and greeted them from the stage as “one of our favorite bands to play with”.

EPs and first album (2002-2005)

Between November 2001 and March 2003, Locas In Love released three EPs and a split single with the band Katzen on various small independent labels . In October 2004, What Matters is the Poem, their first longplay album, was released.

Saurus (2005-2008)

The debut album was followed by contributions to compilations and in May 2006 another untitled EP. After numerous tours and concerts in Germany, Europe and America and long studio work, which was completed in autumn 2006 in the USA with Interpol producer Peter Katis , their second album Saurus was finally released in early 2007 . On this album u. a. Malcolm Middleton to hear as a guest; Locas in Love played in the opening act of his band Arab Strap on their last two tours in Germany before the breakup. The daughters of Wolfgang Niedecken also sing as guests on Saurus . Saurus is the band's first collaboration with a major label, but it also marks the reflection on old DIY virtues: apart from Peter Kati's contribution as a mixer, Locas In Love recorded the album completely on their own, without a producer, sound engineer or financial support from anyone Record company, the contract with Virgin only came about after the album was finished. At the same time, the four band members together with a friend, the actress and singer Claire Oelkers , founded the band Karpatenhund in 2005 , with which they wanted to try out their “vision of music suitable for radio”, and released two albums in 2007 and 2009 (one album and two singles were able to place themselves in the German Media Control Charts).

The second album Saurus was a success for the band and received excellent reviews. The song Schaden was included in the list of the 50 most important songs of 2007 by the Musikexpress , and readers of the Intro magazine voted Saurus at number 20 in the 2007 album charts. In the summer of 2007, the song Sachsen stayed in the campus charts for ten weeks and climbed except for second place. At the beginning of 2008 the songs Saurus and things were used as background music for various television programs.

Winter (2008-2009)

In the spring of 2008 the band separated from drummer Maurizio Arca, and Christian Schneider joined the band for him. In the same summer, Locas In Love recorded their album Winter , which they see as separate from the two previous albums and put it in the tradition of Christmas and winter albums. As guests, u. a. Sam Lazzara ( Le Tigre ), Kyle Resnick (The National, Spoon , Sufjan Stevens ) and LD Beghtol ( inter alia The Magnetic Fields ). The accompanying tour took them across Germany and the east coast of the USA, where they ended the trip in a studio in Brooklyn where they recorded some songs live, which were recorded in January 2010 by the New York indie label The Cougar Label as part of the At Home podcast Anywhere and 2010 on the Avocado EP were released. Singer and guitarist Björn Sonnenberg wrote a detailed diary of the trip, which was published as a daily blog on the Musikexpress website.

Lemming and NO! (2010–2012)

In January 2010 the band started recording their third regular album (fourth if you factor in winter ) in Glasgow . With Paul Savage , the former drummer of the Delgados as producer (who has already worked with Mogwai , Arab Strap , Franz Ferdinand , King Creosote , Teenage Fanclub or Vashti Bunyan ), they recorded them in the legendary Chem 19 , which is affiliated with the Chemikal Underground label Studio. Again a diary was kept of the recordings and published on the website of Rolling Stone Magazine. In 2010, Wardrobe, Jansen and Sonnenberg built their own recording studio in Cologne's Agnesviertel in the rooms of a former Sri Chinmoy meditation center, the Bear Cave Studio, in which they completed the album and have since recorded other artists. For the mix of the album Locas In Love went again to Peter Katis, who had already mixed Saurus , but also worked on some pieces with Jim Eno, the drummer of the band Spoon .

The album Lemming was released on July 1, 2011 on the Staatsakt label and again received very good reviews. Jan Wigger writes on Spiegel Online : "Because you cannot become an insurance clerk or a journeyman butcher with names such as Stefanie Wardrobe, Jan Niklas Jansen and Björn Sonnenberg, the band from Cologne has already concentrated in the past on communicating painful truths in unusual ways" and awards a rating of 8/10. In the Intro Magazine it says: "Locas In Love turn out to be one of the biggest bands in the country on the field of radiant pop ... Let's put it simply: the best unpretentious German-language indie pop album for many years." And im Musikexpress : "The Cologne grummel hit machine runs like clockwork: Locas In Love show that they are still among the best indie bands in Germany."

On the occasion of Record Store Day 2012, Locas In Love released the album NEIN! as a limited vinyl record and again garnered rave reviews. The recordings are unreleased pieces from the Lemming recordings and new songs, etc. a. a collaboration with Fluxus artist Alison Knowles . The artwork is a very faithful copy of the cover of the untitled debut album by the legendary Krautrock band Neu! from 1972.

Use Your Illusion 3 & 4 and Calendar (from 2012)

Immediately after completion of NO! Locas In Love started to work on new material. First in his own studio, then in the summer of 2013 in the Black Box studio in Noyant La Gravoyère, France. Although 21 songs were recorded live there in six days, the final completion of the album turned out to be tedious. The band hardly gave concerts and only reported on their website that they were in an ongoing process of adding, discarding and re-creating. At the end of February 2014, Locas In Love traveled to New York to mix the pieces with John Agnello ( Dinosaur Jr. , Sonic Youth , Kurt Vile ). Other songs were mixed again by Peter Katis and Darryl Neudorf ( Neko Case ) in Montréal . Over the summer Locas In Love also produced instrumental pieces, because the finished album was released as a double album, half of which consisted of songs with vocals and the other of instrumentals. On Use Your Illusion 3 & 4 and concerts in autumn / winter 2014 was partially offset again Maurizio Arca with drummer classical Saurus duty system from 2004 to 2008. Use Your Illusion 3 & 4 was released in February 2015 CD at Warner Music and LP in state ceremony. In addition, the band released a limited LP box together with Staatsakt. a. contained a vinyl toy specially made by Stefanie Schloß and the New York action toy artist Peter Kato, the "Dinobot 3000". With Use Your Illusion 3 & 4 (the album title refers to the two Use Your Illusion albums by Guns N 'Roses from 1991) Locas In Love achieved a position in the Media Control Charts for the first time (# 90). Nine months later, the next album, Calendar , was released, a combination of a wall calendar and an album. The pieces on it were largely created in the same phase as Use Your Illusion 3 & 4 .
