Lothar Geisler (born December 8, 1936 in Dortmund ; † April 29, 2019 ) was a German football player . He graduated from 1957 to 1963 in the then first-class football league West with the clubs VfL Bochum (1957-1959) and Borussia Dortmund (1959-1963) a total of 115 league games and scored two goals as a defender. In the last year of the Oberliga era, 1962/63 , he won the German football championship with Dortmund .

career

Amateur and Oberliga West until 1963

Geisler began playing football at the age of twelve in 1948 as a goalkeeper in the second youth team of VfL Kemminghausen. After two years, he moved to the second youth team of TuS Eving-Lindenhorst in 1950 , where he was no longer used as a goalkeeper, but as a center runner. After he had finished his time in the A-youth, with which he won the "Fredenbaum Cup" several times, he was used in the first team of the TuS in the regional league. From the green-whites of TuS Eving-Lindenhorst, from the Landesliga Westfalen, the defender, who can be used as a middle runner and defender, came to VfL Bochum in the Oberliga West for the 1957/58 season. He made his debut under coach Herbert Widmayer on August 11, 1957 in the 0-1 home defeat against Meidericher SV on the middle runner position in the league. In his second year in Bochum, 1958/59, he came fourth with VfL, one place ahead of Borussia Dortmund. Bochum won both rounds against the team from the Rote Erde stadium . In the first half of the season there was a 3-0 home win and in the second half of the season it was enough to win a 4: 3 away win. In both encounters, the quality of VfL's defense with Geisler successfully kept BVB's offensive power around Alfred Kelbassa , Aki Schmidt , Hans-Georg Dulz , Friedhelm Konietzka and Hans Cieslarczyk in check. After 52 league games for Bochum, Geisler accepted Borussia Dortmund's offer and switched to the black and yellow team for the 1959/60 season. The club and the players even accepted a one-year transfer ban.

On the first day of the round 1960/61, August 14, 1960, Geisler was active for the first time in the Oberliga West for Borussia Dortmund. He directed the Dortmund defense as a center runner in the 4-1 home win against Viktoria Köln. Under coach Max Merkel , BVB reached the runner-up in the west - Geisler had played 26 league games - and thus made it into the final round of the German championship. In the final round, Dortmund prevailed against Hamburger SV , Eintracht Frankfurt and 1. FC Saarbrücken and advanced to the final of the German championship. However, 1. FC Nürnberg prevailed in the final on June 24, 1961 with a clear 3-0 victory against Westphalia with center runner Geisler.

In Hermann Eppenhoff's second year as coach , 1962/63, Dortmund came back to runner-up in the western league behind 1. FC Köln. Geisler now formed the defender pair with Wilhelm Burgsmüller and Wolfgang Paul played the central role. In the final round of the German championship, BVB prevailed against 1860 Munich , Hamburger SV and Borussia Neunkirchen and thus moved into the final on June 29, 1963 in Stuttgart against the West Champion 1. FC Cologne. With the secure support of the defensive with Bernhard Wessel (goalkeeper), Burgsmüller, Geisler, Dieter Kurrat , Paul and Helmut Bracht , a 3-1 victory was achieved against the favored Cologne team and the German championship was brought to Dortmund.

Bundesliga, 1963 to 1967

Immediately before the start of the new Bundesliga , the DFB Cup was played. After successes against Sportfreunde Saarbrücken, 1860 Munich and in the semifinals against Werder Bremen , the final took place on August 14, 1963 in Hanover against Hamburger SV. Uwe Seeler decided the final with three goals in favor of Hamburg. Ten days later, the newly created Bundesliga made its debut. Dortmund took on Werder Bremen on August 24 and lost the opening game with 2: 3 goals. In defense, BVB formed with Hans Tilkowski (goalkeeper), Burgsmüller and Gerd Cyliax in defense, as well as the runner row with Kurrat, Geisler and Bracht. Geisler was a member of the regular formation with 27 appearances and Borussia took fourth place. At the climax of the 1963/64 season, however, were the games in the European Cup against Lyn Oslo , Benfica Lisbon , FK Dukla Prague and Inter Milan . The elimination of the defending champion from Lisbon in the 2nd round with their international greats such as goalkeeper Costa Pereira , midfield strategist Mário Coluna and the attackers José Augusto , António Simões and the outstanding goalscorer Eusébio caused a sensation in November / December 1963, especially the 5th : 0 home win for Borussia on December 4th in front of 40,700 spectators in Rote Erde, with three-time goalscorers Franz Brungs . Geisler directed the defense as a middle runner. In the quarter-finals, the 4-0 away win at Dukla Prague followed, where at least midfield motor Josef Masopust represented a firm international player. In the semifinals, BVB failed because of the eventual cup winners Inter Milan, but showed a great performance against the team of start coach Helenio Herrera in the 2-2 home draw on April 15, 1964 . With Giuliano Sarti (goalkeeper), Tarcisio Burgnich , Giacinto Facchetti , Aristide Guarneri and Armando Picchi as well as temporary Horst Szymaniak, Inter had outstanding defensive players in their ranks. But since there were outstanding forces available for the offensive with Luis Suárez , Mario Corso , Jair da Costa and Sandro Mazzola , Dortmund's 2-0 defeat on April 29 in front of 76,788 spectators in San Siro was not a disappointment. Lothar Geisler played seven games in the national championship competition of the 1963/64 season.

When the runner-up in the Bundesliga with coach Willi Multhaup was reached in the 1965/66 season , Geisler had his share in 17 games with one goal. In the competition of the European Cup Winners' Cup , however, he was not used. Tilkowski, Cyliax, Theo Redder , Kurrat, Paul and Rudi Assauer formed the defensive at Dortmund in the final won 2-1 after extra time on May 5, 1966 in Glasgow against Liverpool . Geisler played the last competitive game for BVB on the start day of the 1966/67 round, August 20, 1966, when they lost 2-1 at home to Fortuna Düsseldorf. Together with Gerd Peehs, he formed the defender couple in the team of the new coach Heinz Murach . After a total of 54 Bundesliga games (1 goal), the defender ended his higher-class career in the summer of 1967 and took over the post of player-coach at his former club TuS Eving-Lindenhorst for the 1967/68 season.

During his time at VfL Bochum, Geisler worked professionally as a lathe operator in the Bochum steelworks. After completing his professional career, Geisler worked as a warehouse manager at the Dortmund public utility company and, as an amateur trainer, looked after various clubs such as Lüdenscheid 09, Teutonia Lanstrop, SuS Menden, TuS Sundern, FC Fröndenberg, SuS Oestrich, Sportfreunde Sölderholz and Ardey Witten.
