Luís Herbst CSSp (actually Ludwig Herbst , born November 23, 1925 in Bardenberg ; † December 31, 2017 ) was a German religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Cruzeiro do Sul .

Life

Ludwig Herbst was born on November 23, 1925 as the eldest son of Alexandrina and Heinrich Herbst in Bardenberg. He has two younger sisters and his father was a plumber. From 1936 he attended the Small Seminary of the Spiritans , first in Broichweiden , then in Knechtsteden and finally in Donaueschingen , where he passed the secondary school diploma in 1943 . He was then drafted into the Wehrmacht as a paratrooper . During his war effort, he was seriously wounded by a shot in the head in January 1945.

Luís Herbst joined the religious community of Spiritans and took his first religious vows in Menden in 1946 . He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1951 in Knechtsteden by Auxiliary Bishop Wilhelm Stockum . From 1953 to 1967 he worked as a missionary in Brazil, where he first worked with Heinrich Rüth , whom he would later follow as bishop. In 1967 Luís Herbst was appointed Vicar General of the Juruá Prelature.

Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor prelate of Juruá on August 14, 1979 . The prelate of Juruá, Heinrich Rüth, donated him the episcopal ordination on November 11th of the same year ; Co-consecrators were Milton Corrêa Pereira , Coadjutor Archbishop of Manaus , and Joaquim de Lange CSSp, Prelate of Tefé . His episcopal motto is Veritas liberabit vos (“The truth will make you free”) ( Jn 8:32  EU ). With the elevation of the territorial prelature Juruá to the diocese of Cruzeiro do Sul on June 25, 1987 he became coadjutor bishop of the new diocese.

When Heinrich Rüths CSSp retired on December 7, 1988, he succeeded him as Bishop of Cruzeiro do Sul. On January 3, 2001, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Bishop Herbst was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Würselen on December 15, 2001 together with his sister Gertrud (born January 9, 1928, † December 14, 2013) .
