Ludwig Wilhelm Theodor von Winterfeld (born March 15, 1798 in Stettin , † June 25, 1889 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian major general in the engineering corps and a member of the study commission for division schools.

His parents were Ludwig Georg Albrecht von Winterfeld (1746–1806) and his wife Charlotte Frederike, née Friese († 1810) from Stettin. The father was a captain a. D. and worked as a license inspector at the maritime trade in Stettin. After the death of her husband, his mother married the Szczecin city ​​councilor Friederici († 1836), who continued to look after the children after his mother's death.

Military career

Winterfeld attended the grammar school in Stettin for some time and in 1814 entered the Prussian service as a pioneer . During the Wars of Liberation in 1814/15 he was assigned to the artillery and engineering school for training purposes . By April 20, 1816 he was promoted to Second Lieutenant and was aggregated to the 1st Engineer Brigade. On November 11, 1816, he was transferred to the 3rd Brigade of Engineers and came to the Luxembourg Fortress as an adjutant to the 8th Engineer Department . On December 1st, 1817, he came to the 3rd engineering inspection as 2nd adjutant and on June 1st, 1821 for fortification services in the fortress of Koblenz . On April 27, 1822, he was promoted to lieutenant prime minister. On June 25, 1827, he was transferred to the Wesel Fortress for service and sent to Danzig on February 22, 1828 . There he came to the first engineer inspection on June 25, 1829, and on January 1, 1833 he was transferred to the second engineer department. On June 27, 1833 he was entrusted with the command of the 1st company of the 2nd pioneer division in Stettin, and on May 30, 1834 he was confirmed as captain 2nd class.

On May 12, 1842, he was commissioned to take on the business of garrison construction director of the 1st Army Corps in Königsberg, and on January 16, 1844, he was appointed director. In this capacity he was promoted to captain 1st class on March 18, 1844. On August 29, 1846, he was transferred to the artillery and engineering school in Berlin. On February 18, 1847, he was appointed major on the staff of the engineering corps. On November 14, 1850, he came from the site to Magdeburg Fortress as an engineer officer and was promoted to lieutenant colonel on March 22, 1853 . This was followed from March 21, 1854 as an inspector for the 4th fortress inspection. On July 12, 1855, he was promoted to colonel and on March 7, 1857, he was appointed inspector to the 1st Pioneer Inspection. On April 4, 1857 he was appointed a member of the examination board for captains and prime lieutenant of the engineering corps. On October 24, 1857, Winterfeld was awarded the Order of St. Anne, Class II, for his war science achievements . On November 22, 1858, he was promoted to major general, but without the salary. At the same time he acted from December 9, 1858 as a member of the study commission for division schools and later also of the war schools. On October 3, 1859 Winterfeld was awarded the Red Eagle II. Class with oak leaves, on June 6, 1861, he now also got a salary for his grade, but already on 25 August 1861 he was a brigade commander with board for disposition made. He remained a member of the study commission of the war schools. Winterfeld was only released from this position on April 29, 1862.

From 1870 onwards it became the deputy president of the National Thank You Foundation for Veterans . He died in Potsdam on June 25, 1881.
