Career

Mogamed Ibragimov grew up in the Soviet Caucasian republic of Dagestan and attended school in the capital Makhachkala . As a teenager he started wrestling in Azerbaijan in 1985 . Magomed played his first international competition in 1994. Up to and including 1996 he started for Azerbaijan, but moved to Macedonia from 1997 for economic reasons and started for a wrestling club in Skopje .

At his first start in an international championship at the World Cup in Istanbul , he was only twenty years old and had to be content with 11th place due to lack of experience. A year later, however, he proved his great ability at the European Championships in Freiburg in Üechtland / Switzerland , because he became European champion with five wins. At the world championship of the same year in Atlanta he was also able to convince, although after a defeat in the quarter-finals against the eventual world champion Kevin Jackson from the USA he only finished 5th. In the fight for this place he defeated the world class wrestler Sebahattin Öztürk from Turkey .

In the Olympic year 1996 Ibragimov achieved the same results as 1995. In April of this year he was in Budapest with victories over Nicolae Ghiţă from Romania , Chadschimurad Magomedow from Russia , Lukman Schabrailow from Moldova and László Dvorák from Hungary , all world class wrestlers and even multiple medalists second time European champion. But when he only achieved fifth place at the Olympic Games in Atlanta that same year, as in the previous year's World Championships, his disappointment was great. This time he failed because of Amir Reza Khadem from Iran , who defeated him on points.

Starting for Macedonia , he reached 6th place at the World Championships in Krasnoyarsk 1997 and won the silver medal in the middleweight division at the 1998 World Championships in Tehran after a 4-0 final defeat against another Iranian, Alireza Heidari .

Ibragimov won the third European championship title in Minsk in 1999 . In the final battle he defeated the newcomer Igors Samusonoks from Latvia safely on points. Then Ibragimov won the bronze medal in the middleweight division at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . In the semifinals he was beaten 3-0 on points by the outstanding Adam Saitijew from Russia , but won the battle for the bronze medal against Amir Reza Khadem and thus took revenge for the defeat at the 1996 Olympic Games.

In the next few years, Mogamed Ibragimov was still active until 2004, he won no more medals at international championships. The 2004 Olympic wrestling tournament in Athens was the last tournament he played.
