Malgrat de Mar is a Catalan city in the province of Barcelona in northeastern Spain . It is in the Comarca of Maresme . Malgrat de Mar is a coastal town and belongs to the Maresme region, which lies in the north of the province and is the last municipality of this region on the coast. The Tordera River borders the next region of La Selva , which is already in the province of Girona . Malgrat de Mar has a 7 km long beach and has numerous hotels and campsites.
In its historic center stands out the Church of San Nicolas, with a neoclassical facade and an octagonal bell tower, a temple known for its size as the Cathedral of the Coast. It also has buildings dating from the Middle Ages (La Cooperativa Library, former hospital) and Modernisme (Ca l'Arnau or Torre de l'Esquena).
Also noteworthy are the castle hill (Castell), crowned by a park with a wonderful panoramic view of the city and its surroundings, or the recently created Francesc Macià Park, as well as the centenary park Can Campassol, the former garden of the house where Zenobia Camprubí was born , the wife of Nobel Prize winner Juan Ramón Jiménez .
Location and climate
The city lies between 3 and 4 m above sea level and enjoys a Mediterranean coastal climate. It is a humid climate with mild summers and mild winters. The average rainfall in the last decade was about 600 l / m² per year.
history
Malgrat de Mar emerged as a small village between the 13th and 14th centuries and was then known as Vilanova de Palafolls. An unsubstantiated etymological legend claims that the name Malgrat comes from the fact that when the people of Palafolls went to work in Vilanova de Palafolls, they did so with a bad name, "Mal grat" (in Catalan). Malgrat de Mar has been recognized as an outstanding cultural, artistic and social center since the 14th century. Even the modernist has left its mark in Malgrat.
Culture and sights
- San Nicolás Church: As we know it today, it dates from the 18th century, although there are remains from earlier eras. Neoclassical style facade dedicated to San Nicolás de Bari.
- Ancient fishing: the butchers' shops were on the south side and the fishmongers on the north side. Today the stone on which the fish was placed is still preserved.
- The town hall: it was inaugurated on August 15, 1913 in a modernist style. Its interior has been completely rebuilt.
- The cooperative building: an old fortified mansion, today the city library.
- Torre de l'Esquena: Modernist style tower that currently has a residential function and comes from the same family that gave the tower its name
- La Pilona: Artificial island about 300 meters from the coast, a resting place for many cormorants.

In its vicinity are the factories, Proquima (Spontex) and laboratories Fher / Asahi Glass (chemical production facility). The main economic activities are related to trade, services and, above all, tourism.
