Mamadou Fofana (born January 21, 1998 in Bamako ), also known as Nojo , is a Malian football player who has been under contract with the French first division club FC Metz since July 2018 . The central defender has been a Malian international since October 2017 .

Career

Mamadou Fofana comes from the youth department of Stade Malien and switched to the offspring of the Turkish club Alanyaspor in January 2016 . On January 14, 2017 (17th matchday) he made his debut in the top Turkish league in a 3-2 home defeat against Caykur Rizespor .

On January 31, 2017, he moved to the second division Bandırmaspor on loan until the end of the 2016/17 season . His first league game he played on February 12 (20th matchday) in the 2: 3 home defeat against Altınordu Izmir , when he came on in the 54th minute for Yiğit Gökoğlan . He quickly established himself as a regular player and returned to Alanya after 10 league appearances .

At Alanyaspor he started the 2017/18 season as a core player in central defense . On January 19, 2018, he flew in the 3-2 away defeat against Kasımpaşa Istanbul in the 83rd minute of the game with " smooth red " and was suspended for two league games. He then slipped out of the starting line-up and ended the season with 24 league appearances.

On July 5, 2018, Mamadou Fofana moved to the French second division club FC Metz , where he signed a four-year contract. On July 30, 2018 (1st matchday) he made his debut in the 1-0 away win against Stade Brest in the second-highest French division. Under head coach Frédéric Antonetti , Fofana developed as a regular player in the 2018/19 season. He won the championship with the Grenats and rose to the first-class Ligue 1 . In total, he was used in 32 league games.

He retained his status as a regular in the 2019/20 season and ended it with 20 league games after it was canceled due to the Covid 19 pandemic .

National team

With the Malian U17 national team , Mamadou Fofana took part in the U17 Africa Cup 2015 in Niger , where he played three games and won the tournament with the selection. He then took part with the U17s in the 2015 U17 World Cup in Chile . There he stood in all seven games over the full distance and reached the final with his home country, which they lost 2-0 to Nigeria .

With the U20 he took part in the U20 Africa Cup 2017 in Zambia , where he played all three games of the selection.

On October 6, 2017, he made his debut in the 0-0 draw against Ivory Coast in the qualifier for the 2018 World Cup for the senior national team . On October 16, 2018, he scored his first international goal in a 1-1 draw against Burundi in qualifying for the Africa Cup of 2019 . With Mali he ultimately took part in this tournament, where he played three games.
