Manfred Brüning (cyclist)

Manfred Brüning (born June 26, 1939 in Lüdendorf ; † March 24, 1964 in East Berlin ) was a German racing cyclist who was active in the GDR .

Life

Manfred Brüning completed an apprenticeship as a butcher after finishing school. From 1956 he began to do organized cycling.

Athletic career

He achieved his first successes in cyclo-cross races when he was GDR youth champion in 1957.

On February 8, 1959, Brüning won the 7th championship of the GDR cyclists in Erfurt in cross-country cycling over 24 km in a time of 51:53 minutes. It was enough for him to finish second at the Berlin road championship in June behind the winner Kurt Müller . He also contested his first international road race in 1959 when he won the last stage of the Tour of Poland and was tenth overall at the end.

In the Tour of Egypt in 1960, he fought for second place after he had also won a stage.

In the years 1961 to 1963 he was three times road team champion of the GDR with SC Dynamo Berlin . At the GDR championships in individual road races in 1962, Brüning was GDR runner-up.

Before Brüning was nominated for the three-country stage race Internationale Friedensfahrt in 1963 , he had started studying to become a qualified sports teacher. In the peace trip he took 19th place and was team winner with the GDR.

In 1963 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

In 1964, Brüning again belonged to the circle of candidates for the peace trip . Even before the team was nominated, he was involved in a truck accident on March 24, 1964 at the Berlin intersection of Kleine Alexanderstrasse and Hirtenstrasse , causing serious injuries. Despite an emergency operation in a hospital, Brüning died as a result of his injuries. From the accident report of the People's Police it emerged that Brüning had probably disregarded the right of way of the truck coming from the right.

After his lying in state in the clubhouse of the SC Dynamo Berlin Bruning's coffin became the residence of his parents in Dietersdorf in Treuenbrietzen transferred, where he was buried on April 1 under large sympathy of the population.
