Manfred Schiek (born November 11, 1935 in Ludwigsburg , † September 11, 1965 near Prague in Czechoslovakia ) was a German automobile and motorcycle racing driver .
Career
Schiek began motor sports as a motorcycle racer in the 1950s . In 1957, 1959 and 1960 he was German cross-country champion and won the gold medal in four international six-day drives. In 1961 he switched to motor racing . As an employee in the sports department of Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart, he was involved in the development and sports activities of the Mercedes 220 SE . As Walter Schock's co-driver , Schiek won the Argentina Road Grand Prix in 1961. In the following year he was co-driver of Hermann Kühne, who died after an accident. Schiek, however, survived only slightly injured.
Together with Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher , Schiek built a Mercedes 300 SE in the Mercedes development department in 1965 for use in the German Circuit Championship and started all races on the AVUS in Berlin from the second race of the season . As a result of this tuning activity, Aufrecht and Melcher founded the AMG company in 1967 . With six wins in eight races, Schiek was 1965, level on points with Gerhard Bodmer, German circuit champion . His daring driving style, which he demonstrated especially when he won the race at the Norisring , made him a crowd favorite.
In September 1965, Schiek started with the co-pilot Martin Braungart in Rally Tour d'Europe and crashed near the second day in Prague when his Mercedes came after overtaking a truck skidded and hit a boundary stone on the roadside. Schiek died as a result of the accident, which his co-driver Braungart survived injured. Schiek was posthumously honored as German circuit champion in 1965 .
