With six wins in eight races, Schiek was 1965, level on points with Gerhard Bodmer, German circuit champion . His daring driving style, which he demonstrated especially when he won the race at the Norisring , made him a crowd favorite.

In September 1965, Schiek started with the co-pilot Martin Braungart in Rally Tour d'Europe and crashed near the second day in Prague when his Mercedes came after overtaking a truck skidded and hit a boundary stone on the roadside.
