Marcel Lenz (born May 3, 1991 in Duisburg ) is a German football player in the goalkeeping position .

Club career

Youth (until 2010)

Lenz grew up in the Duisburg district of Hüttenheim and began playing football in his childhood at VfL Duisburg-Süd, which is based there . He then spent some time at GSG Duisburg from Großenbaum before he was accepted into the youth team of MSV Duisburg . This represented a special step for him because he, like his other family members, is one of the supporters of this club and has regularly attended professional team games since he was a child.

In 2000, the then nine-year-old left the MSV to play in the junior division of FC Schalke 04 . He was accompanied by his younger brother Fabian, who had previously always been registered with the same club as Marcel, but later decided on a career in inline skate hockey and made it into the national team. Unlike his brother, Marcel Lenz remained permanently at Schalke and gradually trained in the youth field. In the B and later in the A youth he received match practice in the Bundesliga of the respective age group.

Development to a professional in Duisburg (2010-2017)

When his time in the Schalke youth team ended in the summer of 2010, the then 19-year-old accepted an offer for the second team of MSV Duisburg . This meant the sporty return to the city in which he still had his residence. With the MSV II he entered the fifth-highest division of the NRW-Liga and shared the goalkeeping position with Roland Müller . At the same time he was also in the professional squad of the second division , but initially had no prospect of missions. In 2012 he was promoted to the fourth-class regional league with the second team, in which he then took a regular place. Among the professionals, he was in third place behind Felix Wiedwald and Roland Müller, which earned him no consideration. At the end of the 2012/13 season, he was relegated to the top division with the second selection, while the license was withdrawn from the first team and thus forced relegation to the third division . Immediately after the club's sporting future in the third division was determined, Lenz announced that he would remain with MSV; the previous contract had become obsolete due to the relegation.

Although both Wiedwald and Müller said goodbye in 2013, a new first goalkeeper was signed in Michael Ratajczak . Lenz became his deputy and replaced the injured regular goalkeeper on August 31, 2013 in a 3-1 away win against FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt at halftime. This was followed by a few more considerations for the then 22-year-old, while he usually took a place on the bench. This changed for the 2014/15 season because the MSV, as a third division team, must have a certain number of players under the age of 23 in the squad, but Lenz was no longer able to contribute to fulfilling this requirement due to his now too old age. Therefore, Maurice Schumacher mostly took the place on the bench, while Lenz received match practice in the second team. Lenz nevertheless kept the second position in the ranking, guarded the goal in two league encounters in 2014/15 and was thus involved in the return to the second highest division in 2015.

Lenz played his first second division game on May 15, 2016. On the last day of the 2015/16 season , he represented the injured Michael Ratajczak in the game against RB Leipzig , which was won 1-0, giving the Duisburgers 16th place in the table and participation at the relegation games against the Würzburger Kickers secured. In the two games against Würzburg (0: 2, 1: 2) Lenz was in goal for more than 90 minutes, and he could not prevent MSV from relegating to the 3rd division. In the 2016/17 season he played a third division game and ultimately managed to get promoted back to the second division with the team.

Regional league with Rot-Weiss Essen (2017-2020)

In the run-up to the 2017/18 season , Lenz moved to the regional division Rot-Weiss Essen . There he was initially a substitute goalkeeper behind Robin Heller, one season later behind Lukas Raeder . He went into the 2019/20 season as the first goalkeeper, but lost his regular place to Jakob Golz, son of Richard Golz . In three years Marcel Lenz only played 17 league games for Rot-Weiss Essen, the club did not extend his expiring contract in summer 2020.

Marcel Lenz then moved to the city rivals Black and White Essen in the Oberliga Niederrhein .

National team

In his youth, Lenz went through several age groups in the junior national teams. He guarded the goal of the German U16 team in three games . Then he was also a member of the U17 national team , but only played one role for them. He then ran four times for the German U18 national junior team . Most recently, in February 2010, he had two matches with the U19 team .
