Marco Büchel (born November 4, 1971 in Walenstadt ) is a former Liechtenstein ski racer .

biography

Büchel contested his first race in the World Cup in January 1991 . It took six years before he was able to place in the top ten of a race for the first time. In the years that followed, his performance became more consistent and he took second and third places several times.

At the 1999 Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail - Beaver Creek , he was runner- up in the giant slalom behind Norwegian Lasse Kjus , and was still leading after the first run. Although he finished third in the giant slalom in Park City in November 1998 , winning the medal came as a surprise. He won four world cup races. In the 2002/03 season , Büchel reached second place in the Super G World Cup. In 2006/07 he finished second in the Downhill World Cup and achieved his best result in the overall World Cup in seventh.

Büchel took part in the Winter Olympics six times. His best placings he reached in 2006 in Turin , when he drove in the super-G in sixth place and in the downhill in seventh place. On November 25, 2006, he replaced Stephan Eberharter as the oldest winner of a World Cup race to date with his victory in the descent in Lake Louise . After his victory in Kitzbühel on January 18, 2008 , the record was 36 years and 75 days. This record lasted until January 22, 2011, when Didier Cuche won the downhill in Kitzbühel.

On March 11, 2010 Büchel drove his last World Cup race. Since the 2010/2011 season he has been working as a racing analyst at ZDF . At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he analyzed the alpine skiing competitions in collaboration with presenter Norbert König . He also works as a radio and television presenter beyond actual sports broadcasts.

Büchel, who grew up in Balzers , was elected Liechtenstein Sportsman of the Year eight times . He lives with his wife Doris in Triesenberg and is an athlete ambassador for the development aid organization Right to Play . In addition to Liechtenstein, he also has Swiss citizenship .
