The birth of Mary in Abens

The Catholic parish and pilgrimage church of Mary's Birth in Abens , a district of the municipality of Au in der Hallertau in the Upper Bavarian district of Freising , was built between 1738 and 1740. The church at Hirnkirchner Straße 1 is a monument of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .

history

Abens is the fourth oldest parish in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising after Altomünster , Waging am See and Otting . It was founded in 759 by Adalunc and Hununc. The first simple church was dedicated to the Archangel Michael . In the late Gothic period, i.e. in the 14th or 15th century, a larger church was built, of which remains can still be found in the masonry of the tower substructure. The miraculous image of Our Lady of Abens , carved from wood, was created around 1460, but the Marian pilgrimage to Abens is said to date back to around 1270.

The current baroque style church was built under the direction of Landshut's master mason Johann Georg Hirschstötter between 1738 and 1740. In 1892 the baroque onion was replaced by a somewhat higher pyramid helmet . From 1950 to 1954 the church was redesigned according to the taste of the time: the neo-Romanesque altars from the 19th century and the colored stained glass windows were removed. The originally colored reliefs on the side altars and pictures of the Stations of the Cross were silver-plated and the ceiling pictures in the choir and nave were repainted by Josef Nickl from Freising . The miraculous image, which is attached to the high altar under a canopy , remained unchanged. The baptismal font from 1463, which is adorned with a coat of arms of the Preysing family , survived all renovations unchanged. The Abens parish has been cared for by Attenkirchen since 1968, and Wolfersdorf has also been part of the parish association since 2007 .
