Maria Mafiosi ( subtitle : Everyone longs for family ) is a German feature film by Jule Ronstedt from 2017. The crime comedy is based on a screenplay by Ronstedt, who made her directorial debut with the production, and is played by the heavily pregnant Landsberg policewoman Maria Moosandl by Lisa Maria Potthoff , whose plans to run south with the child's father are thwarted when his corrupt Neapolitan mafia family plans to marry him off to an Italian woman whom he does not know and also commits a murder that questions Maria's loyalty.

action

Maria Moosandl, a police officer in the tranquil Landsberg am Lech , is heavily pregnant and is on the verge of maternity leave. Together with her child's father Rocco, cook at the local, family-run Pizzeria Il Paradiso , she wants to build a life together in Italy - but he cannot bring himself to tell his parents Silvio and Marcella and his sister Rita about the secret liaison. Maria's colleagues, her father Jürgen, police chief of Landsberg, and his new curious wife Irmi don't know who the father of Maria's child could be either. When Rocco finally finds courage and the head of the family Silvio wants to confess his relationship with Maria, he has already made a decision for Rocco: His only son and heir to the family business is to marry Donatella, the daughter of Mafia boss Buri.

Silvio, who deals in drug trafficking and money laundering for Buri and sees his loyalty and ties to his boss confirmed by the marriage even in far-off Bavaria, meanwhile has a completely different problem: The body of drug courier Valentino Fantuzzi is still hanging on the ceiling of the pantry Il Paradiso and must be disposed of as soon as possible. He instructs Rocco to do this, but while his cold-blooded sister Rita would love to emulate her father, the ambitious cook feels overwhelmed with his father's dodgy undertakings and, in his desperation, half-heartedly dumps the corpse in a local cesspool .

After all, it is Maria who rescues the unknown dead person from the pit and starts the search for the perpetrator. She finds out about the frustrated mayor's wife Uscha, who had an extramarital relationship with the victim, but her father, of all people, puts stumbling blocks in her way - because Jürgen, the Silvio, has not only made a huge career leap due to some precarious information, but also Thanks to his family prosperity, at Silvio's insistence, Tulichst tries to cover up traces of treachery that could lead to the Pacelli family.

When Maria also has to find out that Rocco has already been promised to husband an unknown Italian, she sees her idea of a future together in pieces. But Maria knows how to help herself: while Rocco is led to the altar with a gun by his stubborn father on the day of the planned wedding, the policewoman succeeds in giving his arriving Donatella coke during a routine check and unceremoniously sending her back to Italy under threat of legal penalties . Nevertheless, Maria is in great danger when, in addition to a few meat sausages filled with coke, the vindictive brother of the dead man from southern Italy appears in the village and seeks revenge.

production

Project development

Maria Mafiosi is the film directing debut of the actress Jule Ronstedt , who developed the script for the film together with producer Sven Burgemeister . Ronstedt who had been involved since her time at the drama school at the realization of different plays and previously three short films had realized, of which the two elaborate productions that Miss Karla films, in 2010 and 2013 at the Max Ophüls Festival celebrated premiere had , was inspired to plot the film by a seedy pizzeria in their neighborhood. Ronstedt found the apparently criminal machinations of the restaurant as an exciting topic for a script and, taking into account her desire for a strong female role, decided to write a comedy. Shaped by a few periods of rest, she worked on the script for years before turning to Sven Burgemeister from Goldkind Filmproduktion , whom she already knew from previous projects as an actress. Burgemeister, who described Maria Mafiosi as an “episode of the Bavarian sopranos ”, advised Ronstedt to shorten the script and worked with her to create a more feasible version by shortening or deleting secondary lines, condensing scenes, making adjustments and devising further punchlines.

Filming

Most of the film's exterior shots were made in Landsberg am Lech .

The shooting took place on 26 days between July 4th and August 5th 2016 in Landsberg am Lech , Munich and the surrounding area. In addition to Goldkind, ARD Degeto , SamFilm and Mythos Film appeared as co-producers. The crime comedy received financial support from the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern , the German Film Funding Fund (DFFF) and the Film Funding Agency (FFA). Burgemeister put together a trusted team of experienced crew members from Ronstedt. The start of filming was preceded by two weeks of rehearsals, in which Ronstedt carried out reading rehearsals with the actors as well as tests on the original sets. Although Landsberg acts as the center of the plot, the cast and crew only filmed on location for one week. Then filming continued in the Munich district , where an inn near Oberhaching was transformed into the Il Paradiso pizzeria . In the immediate vicinity, car trips and shots in the excavation were also filmed. Further settings in the sunflower field should also be staged there, but were relocated to Odelzhausen at short notice due to the growth of the flowers that was impaired by the previous year's weather .

Reviews

Cordula Dieckmann from the Augsburger Allgemeine found that Maria Mafiosi was "amusing, but not surprising". The feature film offers "nice crime fun with well-known Bavarian actors and a fast-paced finale". Ronstedt's feature film debut is based on narrative patterns from well-known crime comedies such as Ed Herzog's Dampfnudelblues (2013) or Max Färberböck's pig number four (2010). Maria Mafiosi offers "little new or surprising in this regard, but is solidly staged with amusing entanglements". The Weser-Kurier judged that Ronstedt's Debot was amusing, "but also made an effort with gangster and amigo clichés".

Antje Wessels fromquote meter also compared Ronstedt's debut with Herzog's Eberhofer series and described Ronstedt's debut as “a long and leisurely crime comedy that is regularly seen on television. No less, but definitely no more. ”The production lives from the“ clash of cultures ”, which gives the film“ its narrative dynamic ”, whereby“ the characters are simply too woodcut-like ”and the pinch of whistle is missing can turn platitudes into something fresh. ”The final act is“ quite thrilling and the main actors make every effort to get more out of the film than old-fashioned clichés about Bavarians and Italians, but the until then at most moderately funny and barely exciting crime comedy can't do that save".

Cinema magazine ruled that "the script has a pleasing charm", but "its simplicity certainly casts doubt on its suitability for the cinema". Maria Mafiosi is a "sympathetic dialect comedy" whose "majority of the actors, some of whom seem unwilling, others not capable", however, did not belong on the big screen. The magazine TV Today found the same thing , declaring the film a “simple joke for regional programming” and wrote: “When you hear crime comedies from Bavaria, you immediately think of the Eberhofer crime novels based on motifs by Rita Falk , but this one is so charming and entertaining Dialect fluctuations only rarely. The simplicity of the script and the amateur play of some of the actors are hardly in cinema format. "
