The Pampa Hermosa district is located in the Satipo Province in the Junín administrative region in central Peru . The district was established on March 26, 1965. It has an area of 951 km². The 2017 census counted 4090 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3543, in 2007 7508. The administrative seat is the 1200 m high town of Mariposa with 407 inhabitants (as of 2017). Mariposa is located on the Río Satipo , 21 km southwest of the provincial capital Satipo .
Geographical location
The Pampa Hermosa district extends over the west of the Satipo Province. It has a longitudinal extension in SW-NE direction of 38 km and a maximum width of 12 km. The mountains of the Peruvian Central Cordillera rise to the west of the district . The Río Satipo (also Río Pampa Hermosa) crosses the district in a northeastern direction.
The Pampa Hermosa district borders in the southwest on the districts Andamarca and Comas (both in the province of Concepción ), in the west on the district Monobamba ( province Jauja ), in the northwest on the districts Vitoc and Pichanaqui ( province Chanchamayo ), in the northeast on the Districts of Satipo and Coviriali and in the southeast to the district of Llaylla .
