Markus Schmitt (composer)

Markus Schmitt (* 1965 in Munich ) is a German composer .

Life

Markus Schmitt first learned the horn and piano . Before starting regular studies, he was a young student at the Munich University of Music . After graduating from high school , he began studying composition there with Wilhelm Killmayer . He finished his studies with Killmayer and Hans-Jürgen von Bose in the artistic master class . After completing his studies, he headed the composers' school for amateurs at the Munich Biennale and the Munich Adult Education Center from 1993 to 1995 at the invitation of Hans Werner Henze , the artistic director of the Munich Biennale at the time. In 1996 he worked on the joint composition Das Jahrmarktsfest zu Plundersweilern based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Peter Hacks on behalf of the Rheinsberg Castle Chamber Opera . In the same year he was invited to Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam with the orchestral piece "escalade", which received the "first honorable mention" from the jury at the time . In 1997 he received a scholarship from Villa Massimo , and one year later from the International Artists' House Villa Concordia in Bamberg . Also in 1998 he was invited again to Amsterdam for Gaudeamus Music Week. In 2001 the Bavarian State Opera and the Zurich Opera House performed his opera AIAIA for the first time as part of the teatro minimo composition competition organized by both houses. In 2006 the Katowice Symphony Orchestra performed "Castel Sant'Angelo". The Osnabrück Theater and the Kassel State Theater presented its pocket opera “Im Korb” in the 2007/2008 season. In 2010 he received a scholarship from the German Study Center in Venice .

During his student days he founded the A • DEvantgarde Festival for young composers in Munich together with Moritz Eggert and Sandeep Bhagwati . In 2009, after many years as a member of the board of trustees and project curator, he was also the artistic director of the A • DEvantgarde festival together with his founding colleague Moritz Eggert.

After teaching positions at the former Nuremberg-Augsburg University of Music since 2003 , he is currently a lecturer in music theory , composition and ear training at the Leopold Mozart Center of the University of Augsburg . Markus Schmitt lives in Munich.
