Marquise - Dangerous Intrigue (original title: Marquise ) is a historical film from 1997, which was a co-production of France , Italy , Spain and Switzerland . In the main role, Sophie Marceau can be seen as Marquise-Thérèse de Gorle , who appeared in the 17th century as an actress in plays by Molière and Racines . The film was also released under the title Marquise: The Role of Her Life .

action

Lyon 1665: The dancer and occasional whore Marquise-Thérèse de Gorle enters a market stage and does not let her acclaimed dance stop her even when a thunderstorm sets in. The comedy writer Molière , who is currently in town with his troupe, is impressed by their dance skills. His friend Gros-René, who specializes in comedic supporting roles as an actor, is supposed to convince Marquise to join Molière's troupe. Gros-René therefore visits the Marquise when she is sleeping with a suitor. Fascinated by her beauty, Gros-René proposes marriage to the dancer. Marquise accepts him and travels to Paris with the drama company .

During her first appearance as an actress, Marquise cannot utter a word and leaves the stage in shame. In a theater performance in front of Monsieur , the king's brother, the marquise is only allowed to dance. However, the audience is enthusiastic about her. The young playwright Jean Racine is also instantly taken with her. To the chagrin of Molière, Monsieur wants to perform a ballet with a marquise for his brother. Marquise, however, desperately wants to be on stage as an actress and even offers Molière her body so that he can give her a role. When Molière refuses to comply with her request, the Marquise walks through the park of Vaux-le-Vicomte castle weeping - intending to throw herself off a parapet into a lake. However, Racine, who followed her, prevents her from doing so. Marquise is finally persuaded to dance for the king in the evening. Louis XIV recognized her talent and generously lets her get away with her faux pas of not wearing underwear while dancing.

Next, the king wishes for tragedy. Molière and his actors, who consider themselves pure comedians, are frustrated by this. During the rehearsals for Antigone, Marquise says that only she is suitable for the title role, and thus incurs the anger of her colleagues. After all, it is Racine who takes the marquise under his wing and teaches her to act. He falls in love with her and writes the piece Andromache on her body. Gros-René, loyal to the Marquise in the face of his unconditional love for her, dies shortly afterwards during a performance of Molière's The Conceited Sick . Marquise is heartbroken over his death. The maid Marie finally encourages her to go back to acting.

In the role of Andromache, Marquise makes her long-awaited breakthrough. Molière also congratulates her on her convincing performance. As a celebrated stage star, Marquise is now part of the king's entourage. Although she is now with Racine, she wants to work with Molière and gives him an audience with the king. When Racine's Marquise is pregnant, catches a cold and passes out during a performance, Marie takes on the role of Andromache. Marie, who taught Marquise the role, is even more acclaimed for her performance than Marquise was before. After three days in the sickbed, the still exhausted marquise goes to the theater. She is depressed that she could be replaced so easily, even though Racine had promised her that only she would play the Andromache. To abort the child in her womb, she eats Catherine Monvoisin's chocolate . While the audience celebrates Marie, Marquise goes on stage. Sadly, she announces that she has played the Andromache with her heart and soul and then collapses in pain. She dies in the arms of Racine, who then carries her past the audience.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films found that the film, "whose style controversy between pleasure and tragedy is ironically pointed by the intoxicating expenditure of costumes and extras", is primarily "focused on light and visual compositions" at the beginning, but "in the last." Third achieve a convincing emotionality through the virtuoso direction. Cinema praised the “opulent equipment”, but from a dramaturgical point of view the film was “weak”. In summary, it is a "[a] limited but leisurely drama". According to Prisma , it is thanks to the "good actors - above all Sophie Marceau, Bernard Giraudeau, Lambert Wilson and Thierry Lhermitte -" that "this story, which is now and then somewhat long-winded, still offers the best entertainment".
