History and infrastructure

The place name is a typical clearing name for -reut / -reit 'clearing', which are relatively young here and only date to the earlier modern era.

The town of Marreut is named around 1820 , belongs to the Waldenfels district commissioner , and the local historian Benedikt Pillwein describes the whole of Waldburg “including the parish villages” as “mountainous, stony, sandy, but with laborious cultivation of the soil so rich in grain, barley and oats , Potatoes and flax, so that the inhabitants, who are also busy raising cattle, are adequately nourished. As lonely as the area is. Bohemia often come through, which bring either millstones or fresh fruit from Austria to their home. "

The construction of the horse-drawn railway Budweis (České Budějovice) - Linz 1830–32 as well as the Summerau railway in 1873 left no traces on the rurality of the area, only the expansion of road traffic after the war, the commuting to the central area of Freistadt and Kefermarkt allowed to Linz.

Today they also operate tourism, especially rural private room rental in the Kefermarkt / Freistadt area, for day visitors and holidaymakers, as well as hikers and cyclists: the Europaweg E6 (Finland – Turkey, here also the Austrian long -distance path 05, the north-south path and also 105, the Nordwaldkammweg ) crosses on the stage Bad Leonfelden - Freistadt near Waldburg over to Sankt Peter . The horse-drawn railway hiking trail  (PE) runs along the Kronbach , mostly on the old route, from Kefermarkt to the north. The area is otherwise well developed with marked trails.
