From there the road runs along the eponymous Bohemian Forest parallel to the state border to the Czech Republic , before reaching the state border to Germany at Wegscheid .

history

The origins of this traffic connection can be found in the medieval Polansteig , which connected Horn, Zwettl and Freistadt, but which had a different street course in the area of the Allentsteig military training area, for example .

The road from Zwettl via Döllersheim, Neupölla, Fuglau to Horn-Budweiser Straße next Horn is one of the 17 streets that were declared Lower Austrian state roads in 1866.

The Freiwald Road in Upper Austria was only built in the 1930s. It was an extension of the Freistadt-Sandler Bezirksstraße , which was already assigned to the District Roads in 1866, and led via Rosenhof Castle to the state border at Schönberg.

After the annexation of Austria , Freiwaldstraße was converted into a first-order country road on April 1, 1940 as part of the standardization of the road system and designated as LIO 25. On March 23, 1942, it was declared part of Reichsstraße 388 by a decree of the General Inspector for German Roads .

The Horn-Freistädter Straße between Horn and Freistadt has been part of the network of federal highways in Austria since January 1st, 1950 .

Prestressed concrete bridge over the Ottenstein reservoir

During the construction of the Ottenstein power station, a 700 meter long prestressed concrete bridge had to be built between Friedersbach and Rastenfeld. During the construction of the Purzelkamp Bridge, there was a construction accident on October 24, 1956, in which ten construction workers lost their lives.

The western section between Freistadt and Kollerschlag was originally called Sternwald Straße and has also been part of the network of federal highways in Austria since January 1, 1950.

Since April 1, 1983, the entire route has been referred to as Böhmerwald Straße .

B38  The Böhmerwald Straße, like the other former federal highways, was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002, it has been under state administration and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name Bundesstraße.
