Martin Franz Chales de Beaulieu (born November 11, 1857 in Frankfurt (Oder) , † April 27, 1945 ) was a Prussian infantry general in the First World War .

He was the son of the Privy Council of Justice Eduard Chales de Beaulieu († 13 June 1891 in Berlin) and his wife Caroline, born Lehmann († 14 May 1896 in Berlin). Chales de Beaulieu married on October 17, 1891 in Berlin with Margarethe von Bergemann (born November 13, 1868), a daughter of Lieutenant General Friedrich Bernhard von Bergemann .

Military career

Chales de Beaulieu resigned after the graduating on January 25, 1877 cadet in the Emperor Franz Grenadier Guards Regiment. 2 of the Prussian army one.

He was considered an extremely capable officer and was head of department in the General Staff when, in 1904, he moved from the head of the campaign against the Herero uprising under the Chief of the General Staff, Colonel General Alfred von Schlieffen , to the Chief of the General Staff at the High Command of the German Defense Force in Okahandja ( German South West Africa ). Under the command of Lieutenant General Lothar von Trotha, he held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel .

Due to his sharp opposition to his superior Trotha, who was notorious for brutal and thoughtless warfare, it came to a rift. Trotha reprimanded him sharply. Shortly after receiving the reprimand, Chales de Beaulieu resigned on the advice of a doctor because of "heart disease". As the friendly captain Maximilian Bayer , who also belonged to the high command of the German Schutztruppe, reports, he met Chales de Beaulieu, who was marked by illness and wanted to return home via the port city of Swakopmund (August 26, 1914). .

On June 25, 1913, Major General Chales de Beaulieu became commander of the Silesian 12th Division in Neisse .

At the beginning of the First World War in August 1914, he led his division in the Verband des VI. Army Corps on the Western Front . The division supported the attack on Virton and intervened while advancing in the Argonne in the fighting at Varennes-Montfaucon. This was followed by positional battles at St. Menehould, Souain and Malancourt by the end of 1914 . Chales de Beaulieu led the division in February 1915 in the winter battle in Champagne . From August 12, 1916 to September 5 of the following year, he led the XIV Army Corps as Lieutenant General and Commanding General . In the summer of 1917 the corps was relocated to Flanders and at the beginning of July 1917 it was used as "Gruppe Dixmuiden" in the Third Battle of Flanders to repel French and English attacks between Dixmuiden and Langemark.

On September 5, 1917, Chales de Beaulieu was released from his position and transferred to the officers of the army. He then submitted his farewell, which was approved on January 3, 1918, conferring the character of General of the Infantry and the Crown Order of the First Class with Swords.
