Massimo Manzi

Massimo Manzi (born November 24, 1956 in Rome ) is an Italian jazz musician ( drums , composer ).

As a musician, Manzi is essentially self-taught ; After a few lessons with Bruno Tommaso and Michele Iannaccone, he moved to Senigallia , where he still lives today. In the 1980s he took part in workshops with Max Roach and Elvin Jones , and later with Peter Erskine , Jack DeJohnette and Steve Gadd . First he was in the Rock Jazz group Agora known, with whom he was on a national tour in 1979, then with the Marche Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Bruno Tommaso, with Big Bang by Mario Raja and the Capolinea Big Band.

Manzi is the leader of a quintet and a trio. For a long time he belonged to the trio of Renato Sellani and that of Franco D'Andrea ; he has also recorded five albums with Lee Konitz . He has also performed with Marco Omicini's Knowledge Tower Ensemble and the Contemporary Orchestra under Tony Fidanza. In 1989 and 1990 he gave concerts with Umbria Jazz . In 1999 he toured Japan with Richard Galliano and Furio Di Castri . He also worked with musicians such as Al Cohn , Gianni Coscia , Eddie Lockjaw Davis , Sonny Fortune , George Garzone , Tiziana Ghiglioni , Jimmy Knepper , Mike Mainieri , Pat Martino , Bennie Maupin , Gabriele Mirabassi , Sal Nistico , Roberto Ottaviano , Evan Parker , Irio De Paula , Danilo Rea , Kurt Rosenwinkel , Tony Scott , Pietro Tonolo , Massimo Urbani , Nicola Zambello or Simone Zanchini. He also recorded with Guido Manusardi , Phil Woods , Augusto Mancinelli , Kenny Wheeler and Roswell Rudd . He can be heard on more than 150 albums.

Manzi has worked with companies like Roland on the development of electronic drums and is a lecturer in jazz drums at the Martini Conservatory in Bologna.
