The Mauch is a 21 km long river in the Donau-Ries district in the Bavarian district of Swabia , which flows into the Eger from the left and north-west near Deiningen - Klosterzimmer .

geography

course

The Mauch rises on the mountainous and wooded north edge of the Nördlinger Ries in the natural area foreland of the southern Franconian Jura , as the crow flies about three kilometers northwest of Fremdingen near the associated wasteland of Oppenberg in a northwestern bay through which the B 25 , here the Romantic Road , and the Dombühl railway line –Nördlingen (“Romantic Rail”) move into the Ries. The origin is close to the border to the neighboring district of Ansbach in the district of Middle Franconia . From start to finish, the small river flows in southwest to southern directions. Shortly before Fremdingen, it passes through the five-hectare Mauchweiher, then leaves the wooded area and enters the initially gently undulating, then more and more flat corridor level towards the Ries, in which only noticeable tributaries reach it from the right. The Mauch runs through Fremdingen, where the main road leaves the valley axis to the south. Between Marktoffingen and Utzwingen it breaks through the Riesrand and then passes through Maihingen , the other larger town on the bank. Here the railway line turns south out of the valley basin. A bit below Maihingen, the Arenbach , by far the largest tributary, flows from the right , which is over 13 km long; the next longest doesn't even reach six kilometers. Shortly before Pfäffingen it crosses under the Nördlingen – Gunzenhausen railway line , then the Mauch near Deiningen - Klosterzimmer flows roughly in the middle of the Ries from the left and finally north into the Eger , which bends there in the Mauch direction to the south.

Catchment area

The Mauch drains a total of 62.9 km², to which its largest tributary, the Arenbach, contributes 18.6 km². The catchment area has roughly the contour of a wedge tapering southeast towards the mouth; In the longitudinal direction to the southeast it extends almost 17 km wide, transversely it is nowhere 7 km wide. The Mauch flows in it below Fremdingen mostly very close to the left watershed.

All competing waters beyond the watershed flow to Wörnitz . From northwest to northeast are the right Wörnitz tributaries Hasselbach , Bärbach and the Weiltinger Weiherbach ; from northeast to southeast the Munninger Mühlbach , the Grimmgraben , the Faulgraben and the Wechinger Sulzgraben ; on the entire south side of the Birkhauser Graben to the large Wörnitz tributary Eger ; in the southwest an upper course of the Birkhauser Graben, in the west to northwest the Nordhausen Eight, which also drains via the Schneidheimer Sechta to the Eger .

The highest peaks are on the northwestern watershed, where often over 520  m above sea level. NHN can be reached. The with about 540  m above sea level. NHN highest point is west of Bergheim near the road to Tannhausen .
