The Max-Born-Gymnasium is a science and language high school in Germering . It is in municipal ownership of the district.

location

The high school is located in the middle of the town of Germering in the Bavarian district of Fürstenfeldbruck . Next door is the Germering indoor swimming pool, an artificial turf pitch and the city's athletics stadium.

Naming

The grammar school was named after the German mathematician and physicist Max Born . Born was best known for his collaboration with Werner Heisenberg and Albert Einstein . In 1954 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to modern quantum mechanics .

There were contacts with Gustav Victor Rudolf Born (son of Max Born), a British pharmacologist who regularly attended the school.

In autumn 2016 the school celebrated its 50th anniversary in the Germering town hall. The keynote speaker was Hermann Parzinger . The violinist Arabella Steinbacher also made a brief appearance.

building

Since 2009 the school has had a cafeteria with 120 seats in order to meet the requirements of an open all-day school . The school also has a lunch shop.

A special feature of the school is the observatory . It has two domes; one of them houses a reflecting telescope ( Meade DS-16), the other a 5 " refractor with a focal length of 180 cm.

The school's grass pitch, which is also used for physical education in summer, is the size of an average football pitch . Events such as soccer tournaments and award ceremonies also take place there. The school has a school garden with a biotope . The high school also has several IT rooms and a school aquarium.

A hall of the school, in which there is a projector, a loudspeaker system and a grandstand, is used as a lecture, theater and meeting room. Theater groups, lectures on school topics, parents' evenings, career information events and school meetings take place here on a regular basis.

foreign languages

English and Latin are offered as first and second foreign languages; In addition, the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) from the British elite University of Cambridge can be obtained at the school . French can be chosen as a second and third foreign language, and it is also possible to take the DELF exam. Italian can be chosen as a third or late-beginning foreign language (from grade 10).

Projects

From 2002 to 2007 the grammar school took part in the MODUS21 project as one of the last 44 grammar schools in Bavaria . The aim of this pilot project was to promote independence and entrepreneurial aspects in schools.

Membership in the Association of Mathematical and Scientific Excellence Centers in Schools (MINT-EC for short) has enabled the Max-Born-Gymnasium, as one of 52 high schools in Bavaria, to receive the status of a MINT-EC school. There is also the Max Born Academy for the promotion of talented students, teacher training and cooperation with universities and companies.

Participation in the Comenius program enabled four trips to project schools in Italy, Poland, Hungary and Turkey to take place between 2010 and 2012. In 2012, students from these countries came to the Max Born Gymnasium.

The school participates in the DELTAplus program. The aim of this project is to initiate a process of individual lesson development for the participating teachers towards teaching with increased clarity and effectiveness. On the basis of specific topics from the current curriculum and successful teaching concepts, students reflect on and develop their own teaching at cross-school meetings. Criteria for good teaching are being rethought and the repertoire of teaching methods expanded.

As part of the environmental school in Europe project , schools are awarded that meet special requirements for environmental education and environmentally friendly behavior. In October 2016, the MBG applied with activities on the topics of “Recycling of toner and printer cartridges”, “Problem of plastic waste in the oceans” and “Exercise books made from 100% recycled paper” and was awarded together with 103 other Bavarian schools of all types excellent.

Since the 2017/18 school year, the school has been awarded the title of "School without Racism - School with Courage". The award ceremony is intended to be an impetus to organize actions against racism and exclusion and to think more about the topic. The musician Martin Kälberer took over the sponsorship for this project .

The grammar school is currently trying to get the title of Fairtrade School. On May 16, 2017, after many preliminary meetings and discussions, the MBG school team came together for the constituent meeting. By signing the Fairtrade Compass, teachers, students, representatives of the parents' council and the director of the MBG have committed themselves to meet all requirements in order to become a Fairtade school within one year. All actions, such as anchoring in the classroom, holding events and exhibitions or selling Fairtrade products, must be documented accordingly.

Support association

The Max Born Network, which was launched in 1965 - at the same time as the school was built - is the school's sponsorship association. The association currently has 160 members who make an annual contribution of € 28. The silver donors, of which there are currently 26, contribute € 100 per year. The nine gold sponsors pay a membership fee of € 250.

The goal of the Max Born network is to support school projects - such as the biotope, the observatory, microbiology or robotics - both financially and through volunteer work, and to maintain contact between former students. For this purpose, the association organizes class reunions for the respective Abitur classes at regular intervals.

Career information

Job information evening

Twice a year there is a career information evening at the Max-Born-Gymnasium for pupils in the ninth to twelfth grade, at which former pupils of the school report on their further education and their job. It is also possible to apply directly for an internship in an area of your choice. The event was launched by the Max Born Network and has been taking place regularly since then.

Application training and internship

The school offers eighth grade students to take part in Boys 'Day or Girls' Day . The aim of Boys' Day is to introduce young men to women's professions. All occupations in which the proportion of men is less than 30% are considered to be women. The aim of Girls' Day is therefore to introduce young women to male professions.

Every year, the grammar school organizes a one-week internship for the ninth grade students. The pupils have to choose the company in which they want to work themselves and write an application accordingly. The students are always exempt from teaching in the week before the Whitsun holidays.

deals

The student co-responsibility (SMV) is responsible for the interests of the students and organizes projects and events that are intended to promote interaction between the students. Every year the so-called “Santa Claus Campaign” takes place, during which the schoolchildren are able to give away Fairtrade chocolate Nicholas to classmates. There is an SMV ski day in winter. Every year the SMV organizes the "Mini-Promnight" for the lower school students. For this purpose, a hall of the school is being converted into a disco with a DJ and dance floor. The Bavarian Day, introduced in 2009, serves to preserve Bavarian traditions at the school. All students and teachers are asked to come to school in traditional costumes on this day. There is also a veal sausage breakfast. The SMV has its own room and an SMV constitution in which the precise tasks and duties of the SMV are noted.

Interested students have the opportunity to take part in a string class. A string instrument can be learned in parallel to music lessons.

During the research week it is possible for a small number of pupils to leave everyday school life and to gain insights into research activities together with pupils from other federal states.

Another project in the MINT area is the research class in the lower level, which started in the 2013/14 school year and is about experimentation and competition preparation in the natural sciences. A chemistry and a physics teacher always cooperate and supervise a group of students.

The school has open afternoon and homework support, which is open between 12:25 p.m. and 4:10 p.m.

The school offers pupils in the fifth to twelfth grades the opportunity to take part in competitions such as the Kangaroo of Mathematics , Pangea Mathematics Competition , the Federal Foreign Languages Competition , the European English competition The Big Challenge or the competition against smoking - “ Be Smart Don't Start ”.
