The 196 acres (79.3 ha ) comprehensive nature reserve Medfield Rhododendrons (short Medfield Rhododendrons ) is located near Medfield in the state of Massachusetts of the United States and used by the organization The Trustees of Reservations managed.
Protected area
The area was established to protect the local populations of the rhododendron species rhododendron maximum , one of only three evergreen rhododendron species native to eastern North America. The plant is most common in the southern Appalachian Mountains and reaches its northern limit in New England . Rhododendrons were particularly popular towards the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries due to their blooming, so that their populations were almost exterminated due to extensive collecting activities. Today only seven natural occurrences are known, including the plants in the protected area.
