Medication was an American alternative band from Los Angeles , California, initially active from 1999 under the name Pale Demons . The members, all known from other bands and projects such as Life of Agony , Machine Head , Soulfly or Ugly Kid Joe , released an EP and an album under the name Medication , before the constantly moving musical constellation announced its final dissolution in 2003.

Band history

Logan Mader founded a new band in 1999, initially under the name Pale Demons , after he had to leave Machine Head and his guest appearance at Soulfly had proven to be short-lived. The original line-up of the band included Mader , bassist Robert Trujillo, who previously played with Suicidal Tendencies , and Mader, drummer Roy Mayorga, who was known from his time at Soulfly . With singer Whitfield Crane , who had great success with Ugly Kid Joe in the early 1990s and had been Life-of-Agony front man for two years , Mader has been friends since they first met at Ozzfest in 1998.

In the middle of 2000 the name was changed to Medication , Trujillo switched to Ozzy Osbourne and was replaced in 2001 by Kyle Sanders (formerly with Skrew ), and Blunt from Adayinthelife also joined as the second guitarist . Mayorga also left Medication temporarily for Ozzy Osbourne, but returned less than a month later. Medication played their first concert under a new name at Whiskey a Go Go in Los Angeles.

Whitfield Crane appeared on Medication in 2002

In early 2002, after various demo recordings, Medication was the first US band to receive a record deal with Locomotive Music . Shortly thereafter, a self-titled debut EP was released through this label . In the summer of the same year the album Prince Valium followed , on which Josh Freese ( inter alia A Perfect Circle , Vandals ) could be heard on drums after Mayorga left the band to return to Soulfly.

Shannon Larkin from Godsmack played the drums at Medication for a short time, before Jason Loree temporarily took over the vacant drum position at the following US concerts with American Head Charge and Coal Chamber , a little later Chris Hamilton ( Crowbar , Downset ) joined Medication and played also the concerts during the band's first tour through Europe.

Medication finally broke up after poor sales of Prince Valium , the loss of their record deal with Locomotive Music in their home country and following a second European tour with Before the Dawn in February 2003 that was canceled at short notice .

Style and reception

The supergroup, made up of a “bunch of seasoned 90s metalheads”, had a reputation due to the prominence of its members that many critics said they were barely able to fulfill. Elsewhere there was even talk of failed and “stranded musician existences” that had come together to form a kind of self-help group.

Positive voices, on the other hand, praised the driving forces behind Medication, Crane and Mader, because they had impressively demonstrated “that they were often wrongly criticized in the past. Guitarist Mader is by no means the unimaginative rental musician that Machine Head called him after he left, and Crane has one of the most expressive voices in the rock scene, has a lot more to offer than sleazy Ugly Kid Joe numbers. "

Musically, the " upper middle class alternative rock " was located as a "mix of grunge à la Stone Temple Pilots and subtle nu-rock " or nu metal . Medication played conventional, largely experiment-free and yet poignantly catchy numbers with a high catchy tune . Overall, however, Medication rarely achieved the depth and intensity of their role models and that of their own predecessor bands.
