Mel is a fraction of the northeast Italian municipality ( comune ) Borgo Valbelluna in the province of Belluno , Veneto region . The place is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia ( German  The most beautiful places in Italy ).

geography

The place Mel is located about 12 kilometers southwest of Belluno on the Piave river on the orographic left side of the Piave valley. In addition to the historic town center, Mel also has extensive scattered settlements with small churches on ancient foundations, the sacred structures called tarioi , often in a ruinous state or remodeled into small residential houses, are a specialty of the region.

Its history, which goes back to the 5th century BC, coincides with that of the northeastern provincial capital Belluno .

Mel merged with Trichiana and Lentiai on January 30, 2019 to form the new municipality of Borgo Valbelluna. The municipality seat of the new municipality is in Mel. The former municipality of Mel last had 5968 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2017) on an area of ​​approx. 85 km², which corresponds to an average population density of 73 inhabitants / km². The neighboring municipalities were Cison di Valmarino ( Province of Treviso ), Follina (Province of Treviso), Lentiai, Miane (Province of Treviso), Santa Giustina , Sedico , Trichiana and Valdobbiadene (Province of Treviso).   • Piazza Papa Albino Luciani (formerly Piazza Umberto I ) with the town hall (frescoes with scenes from the Orlando Furioso by Ariost ); Late Renaissance and Baroque palaces ( Casa Fulcis , Palazzo delle Contesse , Palazzo Guarnieri , Casa Francescon);
  • The interior of the baroque parish church contains paintings by Andrea Schiavone and Cesare Vecellio .
  • In the Chiesa dell'Addolorata there are also paintings by Andrea Schiavone and a Renaissance baptismal font.
  • In the district of Tiago is the Castello di Zumelle , which dates back to a Roman fortress from the year 46.
  • The Archaeological Museum displays finds from a palaeovenetic necropolis that was excavated near the site.

  • Art exhibitions are held regularly in the Palazzo delle Contesse.
  • In the courtyard of the Palazzo Guarnieri, a three-day presentation of choral singing is held every year at the beginning of July ( Rassegna Internazionale del Canto Corale ).
  • In autumn, a market ( Mele a Mel ) is held in the old town, where local products from the region can be tasted at tasting stands.
  • Every year in September, a mask festival ( Carri allegorici ) takes place on Luciani Square .

tourism

The area around Belluno is well visited in all seasons, but consciously avoids mass tourism. Agritourism is offered in a variety of ways as an alternative form of vacation; Mountain hikers and skiers will find opportunities for sporting activities in the geographical area in front of the Dolomites .

The Touring Club of the Veneto region has awarded Mel the "Orange Flag" ( Bandiera Arancione ) twice, a quality award for environmentally friendly "gentle" tourism.
