The following year the city was incorporated . The name Mendota comes from a language of the Native Americans who previously settled there and means "crossing of two roads", the name was chosen because the city is the routes of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad crossed. Also in 1853, a railway depot was built in Mendota , the second floor of which housed a hotel.
