Metamorphosis (The Rolling Stones Album)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Metamorphosis (' Metamorphosis ') is a compilation album by British rock band The Rolling Stones that was released in 1975. It contains demo versions and outtakes recorded from 1964 to 1970. In the Federal Republic of Germany it was published by Teldec "Telefunken-Decca" -Schallplatten GmbH in Hamburg and in the USA by Abkco Records.

history

After the release of "Greatest Hits" album Hot Rocks 1964-1971 in 1971 an album called "Necrophilia", consisting of unreleased outtakes of the Rolling Stones recordings from 1964 to 1970, with the help of Andrew Loog Oldham compiled which, however, was not published. Instead, another "Greatest Hits" album More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies) was released in 1972 . In 1974 an album called "Black Box" was put together from the recordings planned for Necrophilia in collaboration with the then Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman , which was also not released. Since the Rolling Stones manager of the 60s Allen Klein , who owned shares of the exploitation rights of the Rolling Stones recordings from this period and shares of the publishing rights of the Jagger / Richards songs of the 60s, insisted on more Jagger / Richards songs used in this project, Metamorphosis was published instead .

The album was researched and compiled by Al Steckler. The artistic directors were Al Steckler and Richard Roth, the concept was provided by Glenn Ross, and the graphics were made by Linda Guymon. The album was produced by Andrew Oldham and Jimmy Miller .

At the beginning of their careers, singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards were urged by their manager at the time, Andrew Loog Oldham, to write their own songs for other pop singers. The results of this commissioned work are, for example, the piece As Tears Go By for Marianne Faithfull , or When Blue Turns to Gray for Dick and Dee Dee . “Demo” recordings were made of these songs, partly with studio musicians, partly with the Rolling Stones as a studio band. Some of the demo recordings were used as a backing track (playback) for the later recordings, in that only Mick Jagger's vocals were replaced by the vocal recordings of the respective singer. Some of these recordings were used (with the vocals of Mick Jagger) for the 1965 album December's Children (And Everybody's) in the USA, which was rejected by Brian Jones , but strengthened the reputation of the Jagger / Richards duo as songwriters. Other previously unpublished recordings from this period are included on Metamorphosis , with Mick Jagger's voice on the demo recordings. And so it happens that on some recordings the only Rolling Stone on the recordings is singer Mick Jagger. Other recordings are from sessions for Aftermath , Beggars Banquet , Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers ; they are outtakes, that is, recordings made for these albums but not used after all.

The US edition is missing We're Wastin 'Time and Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind . The inner sleeve of this LP contains a photo of a woman with a Metamorphosis T-shirt and an order coupon for such a shirt.

Cover

The cover shows a drawing by Linda Guymon. It shows the six Rolling Stones members of the 1960s (Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Mick Jagger and Brian Jones) with insect heads and masks of their real faces in hand.

The back cover shows a drawing of a tree with a wasp's nest on one of its branches. There are printed liner notes that the first Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham contributed, including the track list of the album and the production details.
