Metzradt , also Metzrad , is the name of an old, originally Saxon noble family . The family, some of which still exist today, belongs to the Upper Lusatian nobility.

history

origin

According to Ernst Heinrich Kneschke , the family appears as early as the first half of the 13th century. Relatives, together with other noble families, are said to have been among the co-founders of the Minorite monastery in Budissin ( Bautzen ) in 1224 and of the Church in Milkel in 1322 .

The family appeared for the first time in a document and sealed on September 14, 1324 with the sons of Sibert de Meczinrod , Colmann , Fritzko and Johann and their sons.

Melchior von Metzradt and Kringelsdorf was Marshal at the court of the Dukes of Brieg in 1545 . He was the progenitor of all other Metzradt in Upper Silesia .

Hans von Metzradt appears in 1489 as governor in Upper Lusatia. Hannibal von Metzradt auf Doberschütz in 1541, Nicol in Schönbach in 1547, Hans in Techritz in 1548 and in the same year Christoph von Metzradt in Wülckwitz became district judge in Upper Lusatia. Wilhelm von Metzradt was an imperial colonel around 1530 and distinguished himself in the war against the Turks. In 1537, Magaretha von Metzradt was the abbess of the St. Marienstern monastery . Nicolaus von Metzradt, Imperial Councilor, was appointed commissioner in 1549 when the Electorate of Saxony handed over the Duchy of Sagan to Emperor Charles V. In 1566 Christoph von Metzradt auf Schnallern commanded all 260 riders who sent the Upper Lusatian estates to help Emperor Maximilian II in the fight against the Turks. Hans Wolff von Metzradt auf Colmen was initially the thigh of the Saxon Elector Johann Georg I and was later appointed House Marshal . The line in Bohemia probably came from the Kleinbautzen house . Heinrich von Metzradt appears in 1490 as a royal Bohemian and Hungarian thigh. From Christoph von Metzradt auf Kleinbautzen, who lived at the beginning of the 16th century, came Caspar, royal Bohemian captain and chief forest master of the Priglitz castle in Bohemia. Abraham, another son of Abraham auf Kleinbautzen, was initially a councilor for the Counts of Rosenberg in Bohemia and around 1620 in Upper Lusatia. His brother Heinrich von Metzradt was a state elder and later administrator of the bailiwick in Upper Lusatia . He resigned this office because of his age in 1648 and died as a councilor of the Electorate of Saxony without heirs in 1662.

The line that was later located in Upper Lusatia came from the Uhyst company . The family line begins with Hans von Metzradt († 1569) on Eselsberg and Dürrbach . His grandson Caspar von Metzradt auf Uhyst und Eselsberg died in 1656 as a state elder in the Görlitz district. His son Hans Rudolph auf Uhyst († 1684) was also the state elder and councilor of the Electorate of Saxony. His son of the same name, Herr auf Uhyst, Lips , Geislitz, Driewitz and Ratzen, was a royal Polish and electoral Saxon councilor. He was able to continue the line with three sons.

A branch from the Räckelwitz house used to sit at Milckwitz. The progenitor of this branch was Christoph von Metzradt auf Räckelwitz, who died around 1567 and left three sons. His grandson Christoph (II.) Von Metzradt, son of Hans von Metzradt auf Rackelwitz and Hennersdorf, was the heir to his father's property. His descendant Christoph (III.) Von Metzradt became a district judge in Upper Lusatia. His son Seyfried (Siegfried) was from Metzradt (1600-1668) on Milckwitz monastery Vogt in pen Marienstern and died in 1668 as electoral Saxon district and Amtshauptmann the rule Hoyerswerda . He was the owner of the manor of Ober-Spremberg, today the city of Neusalza-Spremberg . Its epitaph is on the apse (outside) of the Spremberg village church .

In recent times, numerous members of the family served in the electoral or royal Saxon army, including in the middle of the 19th century Johann Carl Adolph von Metzradt as lieutenant colonel and commander of the 2nd infantry battalion (see also Landhaus Mehlhorn ). Ernst Caspar von Metzradt was a major in the 13th Infantry Battalion and Adolph Louis von Metzradt was a captain in the 10th Infantry Battalion.

Mathilde von Metzradt appeared as a writer between 1936 and 1954, with historicizing, German-tumbling exoticisms as the subject.
