Michael Dickins Ford (* 1928 in southern England ; † May 31, 2018 ) was a British illustrator , art director and production designer who won two Oscar for best production design and was twice nominated for an Oscar in this category.

Life

After attending school, Ford first studied fine arts at Goldsmiths College at the University of London and then worked as an illustrator, before becoming an art director and production designer in the film industry in 1972 .

At the Academy Awards in 1981 he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Set Design in the Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back (1980) from Irvin Kershner with Mark Hamill , Harrison, along with Norman Reynolds , Leslie Dilley , Harry Lange and Alan Tomkins Ford and Carrie Fisher in the lead roles .

In 1982 he and Norman Reynolds won his first Oscar for best production design for the adventure film Raiders of the Lost Ark (1982) by Steven Spielberg with Harrison Ford, Karen Allen and Paul Freeman .

He got another Oscar nomination together with Reynolds, Fred Hole and James L. Schoppe in 1984 for the Star Wars film Return of the Jedi (1983) by Richard Marquand , again with Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher in the leading roles .

At the Academy Awards in 1998 , he and Peter Lamont finally won his second Oscar for Best Production Design in Titanic (1997) by James Cameron with Leonardo DiCaprio , Kate Winslet and Frances Fisher .
