Michael Wirtz (born January 3, 1939 in Stolberg in what was then the Aachen district , now the Aachen city region ) is a German entrepreneur .

Life

Michael Wirtz studied after graduating from high school in 1957 in Munich Business Administration in Bonn , Frankfurt and Wuerzburg (Dipl.-Kfm.). He has been a member of the Corps Palatia Bonn since 1957 .

In 1969 he joined the Stolberg family company Grünenthal GmbH founded by his father Hermann Wirtz and was the managing partner of the pharmaceutical company. In 2005 he handed over the management to his son Sebastian Wirtz and Stefan Genten. Michael Wirtz took over the chairmanship of the Grünenthal Foundation for Palliative Medicine .

According to the manager magazine of February 14, 2005, the Wirtz group of companies , which also includes the cosmetics company Mäurer & Wirtz and the detergent and cleaning agent manufacturer Dalli-Werke , earned around 1.3 billion euros in 2003 with around 7,000 employees . A total of 19 family members are involved in the three companies; their wealth is estimated at 2.5 billion euros (as of 2013).

From 1998 to 2008 Wirtz was President of the Aachen Chamber of Commerce and Industry . Wirtz is Honorary Consul of Ecuador and has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Aachen Charlemagne Prize since 2003 . Since 1968 he has been a member of the board of the Dombauverein / Karlsverein for the restoration of Aachen Cathedral and since 1995 chairman of the European Foundation Aachen Cathedral. Michael Wirtz has been a long-standing member of the board of trustees of the German Foundation for Patient Protection , a lobby organization for seriously ill, care-dependent and dying people.

As chairman of the Grünenthal Foundation for Palliative Medicine , he was committed to the establishment of the Chair for Palliative Medicine at RWTH Aachen University and at the same time to founding the Clinic for Palliative Medicine at Aachen University Hospital .

Michael Wirtz is involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land and is a member of the German Association of the Holy Land . In 1989 he was appointed Knight of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Giuseppe Cardinal Caprio and invested in Mainz Cathedral on May 20, 1989 by Franz Cardinal Hengsbach , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . Michael Wirtz is a Grand Cross Knight of the Papal Lay Order. From 2005 to 2012 he was chairman of the Holy Land Commission of the Lieutenancy in Germany. For his commitment he was honored by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem with the Golden Palm of Jerusalem .
