Life

Terebenjows father Ivan Jefimowitsch Terebenjow (1759-1799) was an artist and member of the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. In 1803 Terebenev joined the Academy of Arts as one of the children of the members and employees of the Academy. From 1811 he studied in the class of the portraitist Stepan Shchukin . For his special achievements he received the Small Silver Medal in 1810 and 1811 and the Large Silver Medal in 1812. During the war of 1812 , 205 students from the Academy were evacuated to Petrozavodsk as a result of the threat to St. Petersburg , including Terebenev for his excellent achievements. After the end of the war, the commander of the partisan detachment, Lieutenant General Ivan Dorochow , ordered a portrait of the partisan Yegor Stulow from Terebenjow , who was the only farmer to receive the George Cross , which was reserved for soldiers . With his diploma thesis Russian Peasant Wedding in 1815 he completed his studies as a Classical Artist 1st Class with the Great Gold Medal, a boarding house at the Academy of Arts and the right to travel to Europe for further training. However, in 1817, graduates were invited to develop their skills in the service of the academy. The Russian peasant wedding was bought by Empress Maria Fyodorovna and hung for a long time in the Palace of Constantine .

Terebenjow now painted portraits of well-known Russian cultural workers and scientists, such as Fyodor Alexejew (1820), Prince Alexander Odojewski (1823–1824), Michail Glinka (1824), Vasily Karatygin (1828), Ilya Bujalsky (1829) and Alexander Turgenew (1830s ) ) among other. Alexander Griboyedov's portrait (1824–1825) served Nikolai Utkin as the original for one of his most famous etchings . Terebenev's portrait of the Decembrist Dmitri Zawalishin was found with Lieutenant Theopempt Lutkowski , who had participated in the circumnavigation of his brother-in-law Vasily Golovin and was now suspected of being a co-conspirator.

In 1830 Terebenjow was elected an academician for miniature painting for the miniature portrait of Wassili Demut-Malinowski . 1830–1840 he taught at the St. Petersburg Michail Artillery School . He created pictures for the Sioni Cathedral in Tbilisi (1837), for the church of the St. Petersburg Michail Artillery School (1860–1861) and for the church of the Peter and Paul Hospital in St. Petersburg (1861). His oil paintings and watercolors were also genre pictures and images on historical topics, the return from the war and Bishop Mitrofan of Voronezh gives Peter the monastery money to build a fleet to the siege of Azov . Shortly before his death in September 1864, he completed his work to free the peasants from serfdom .

Terebenev's works are in the Russian Museum and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the All-Russian Pushkin Museum in Pushkin and the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, as well as in the museums of Yekaterinburg , Kostroma , Perm , Yaroslavl and others.

Terebenev's brothers Ivan (1780–1815) and Vladimir (1808–1876) were also artists.
