He won 125 of 148 amateur fights and was multiple times Puerto Rican champions in his age and weight classes. Other successes were the second place at the Pan American Junior Championships in 1998 in Mexico and the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1998 in Venezuela, where he was defeated in the final against Mario Kindelán .

He also took part in the 1999 Pan American Games in Canada and also in the 1999 World Championships in Houston , but without reaching the medal ranks. The conclusion of his amateur career was his participation in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney , where he was defeated in the first fight against Muhammadqodir Abdullayev from Uzbekistan.

professional

Cotto became a US light welterweight professional in 2001 and signed to Bob Arum . He won each of his 32 fights by mid-2008, 26 of them prematurely. Already in his development phase he beat well-known names like Justin Juuko (World Championship challenger of the WBA / WBC) and John Brown (four-time World Championship challenger of the IBF). On February 1, 2003 he won against ex-WBC world champion César Bazán , the WBC international light welterweight championship and defeated in the next fight Joel Perez, world championship challenger of the IBF. Against Román Martínez, he also fought for the NABO North America Championship in June 2003. Victories against the strong opponents Demetrio Ceballos, Carlos Maussa and Victoriano Sosa followed, before he also fought for the Central American Championship of the WBA against Lovemore N'dou in May 2004 .

On September 11, 2004 he boxed for the vacant WBO World Cup against the also undefeated Brazilian Kelson Pinto (record: 21-0, 19 knockout) and won by tKo in the sixth round after he had Pinto on the ground three times . He then defended the title early against Randall Bailey , DeMarcus Corley , Muhammadqodir Abdullayev , Ricardo Torres and Gianluca Branco , as well as on points against Paul Malignaggi .

Then he switched to welterweight and won here on December 2, 2006 by tKo in the fifth round against Carlos Quintana (23-0, 18 knockout), the vacant WBA World Cup. He was able to defend the title against the absolute top boxers Oktay Urkal , Zab Judah , Shane Mosley and Alfonso Gómez , whereby he only had to go the full number of laps with Mosley.

On July 26, 2008 he went to his fifth title defense against the Mexican Antonio Margarito and surprisingly lost by technical knockout in the eleventh round. After a previously even fight, he had to accept two knockdowns this round, whereupon his corner finally threw in the towel.

In his next fight Cotto won the vacant WBO welterweight title on February 22, 2009 in New York's Madison Square Garden with a tKo in the fifth round against the British Michael Jennings, and defended it on points against the Ghanaian Joshua in June 2009 Clottey . On November 14, 2009, however, he lost the title with no chance due to a tKo defeat in the twelfth round to the Philippine Manny Pacquiao .

Boxing in the light middleweight division, he also won a world title here when he defeated Yuri Foreman in the ninth round in the fight for the WBA title by tKo on June 5, 2010 . This was followed by upgrading to super world champion and two more early wins against Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito .

On May 5, 2012 he was defeated against [[

Holyfield at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2010.

]] and seven months later against Austin Trout . On June 7, 2014 he boxed for the first time in his middleweight career and surprisingly defeated the number 1 in this weight class, the Argentine Sergio Martínez by tKo in the tenth round in the fight for the WBC title .

In June 2015 he defended his title through tKo in the fourth round against Daniel Geale (31-3). On November 21, 2015, he boxed against Saúl Álvarez and lost on points. His world title had previously been withdrawn because he had not paid the WBC association's combat exchange.

On August 26, 2017, he defeated Yoshihiro Kamegai (27-3) unanimously on points in the fight for the vacant WBO world light middleweight title. However, he lost his first title defense on December 2, 2017 on points against Sadam Ali (25-1).
