Mika Vermeulen (born June 26, 1999 ) is an Austrian cross-country skier who used to be active in Nordic combined .

Career

Vermeulen began his international sports career as a Nordic combined skier before switching to cross-country skiing in 2018. He also took part in cycling competitions. His parents Vincent (* 1969) and Dorien (* 1972) were Dutch cross-country skiers who moved to Ramsau in order to be able to practice winter sports better. It is therefore hardly surprising that Mika's great strengths lie in the trail . In fact, Mika started cross-country skiing at an early age, before he also started ski jumping a little later. His first cross-country trainers were Reini Walcher and Dagmar Tritscher, while Percht Geri accompanied his first steps in jumping. However, due to a lack of ski jumping training, he repeatedly had to stop jumping. It was only as a graduate of the ski school under coach Volker Pichler that Vermeulen was able to focus on Nordic combined. He belonged to the final class of 2012/13 at the Schladming ski school. Together with his brother Moran (* 1997) he was mainly trained by his father. Moran is now an active cyclist and rode for Tirol Cycling, among others.

Nordic combination

Vermeulen, who competes for WSV Ramsau am Dachstein in Styria , made his international debut in Nordic Combined in mid-December 2013 at the Alpine Cup competition in Seefeld , but only reached the lower ranks. He celebrated his first success in the youth field a few months later at the Nordic Ski Games of the OPA in Gérardmer , France , when he won the school competition based on the Gundersen method from the middle hill and over four kilometers ahead of Aaron Kostner . After starting regularly in the Alpencup in the following months, Vermeulen was appointed to the Austrian squad for the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2015 in Tschagguns . Although he stayed away from the medal ranks as eleventh and twelfth in the two individual competitions, he proved to be extremely valuable in the relay. So Vermeulen prevailed as the final runner in an exciting finish against Willi Hengelhaupt from Germany and won gold for Austria together with Daniel Rieder , Philipp Kuttin and Samuel Mraz . About a year later, at the Nordic Ski Games of the OPA 2016 , Vermeulen was again the last runner in the squad of the ÖSV relay, for which he was able to secure the gold medal in a thrilling sprint against Germany. Two weeks later, Vermeulen won his first Alpine Cup competition in Planica . He then made his debut in the Continental Cup in Chaux-Neuve at the beginning of March , where he was able to collect his first eleven points on the second day of competition. He concluded the season with another Alpine Cup victory in Baiersbronn .

In the summer of 2016, Vermeulen started in the Grand Prix for the first time , but was unsuccessful. At the beginning of winter he started again in the Alpine Cup, in which he celebrated three victories in the 2016/17 season and finished fifth in the overall standings. As the great hope of the ÖSV, Vermeulen was nominated for the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2017 in Park City . He was able to live up to these expectations in the Gundersen individual over ten kilometers by winning the silver medal behind Arttu Mäkiaho . In addition, he was together with Samuel Mraz, Marc-Luis Rainer and Florian Dagn as the final runner Junior World Champion with the relay before France and the Czech Republic. In the sprint, he only finished 25th. Then Vermeulen was allowed to start again in the Continental Cup in Eisenerz , Germany , and was able to achieve a strong ninth place. In the overall ranking of the Continental Cup he reached 59th place. In September 2017 it became known that Vermeulen had received a grant from Österreichische Sporthilfe and UNIQA in the amount of 3,000 euros. According to his own statements, he used this for his material, but also to finance a training camp.

In the 2017/18 season, Vermeulen only faced international competition in the Continental Cup in Klingenthal in January 2018 . With good mileage he finished in the points on both days of the competition. After two more victories in the Alpine Cup in Schonach , he traveled to Kandersteg, Switzerland, for the 2018 Nordic Junior World Ski Championships . There he finished 6th and 17th in the individual competitions. Together with Johannes Lamparter , Florian Dagn and Dominik Terzer , he defended the team junior world championship. A week later, Vermeulen had his best results in the combiners. In the Continental Cup competition in Eisenerz, for example, the Styrian was only 30th after jumping, but was able to make up the gap of over two minutes on the leader and take a sensational victory ahead of Mikko Kokslien and Espen Bjørnstad . "An amazing achievement from my Bua", his father summed up the performance of Vermeulen. Also on the second day of the competition, Vermeulen went a long way behind on the trail, but still managed to finish on the podium with third place. This weekend once again revealed his talent for skating and his weaknesses in jumping. It was his last competition as a Nordic combined athlete.

Cross-country skiing

“My love is cross-country skiing, and I want to develop very strongly here in the next few years.” This is how Vermeulen explained his switch to cross-country skiing for the 2018/19 season. In previous years he had already taken part in international junior races and had also been successful in Austrian youth championships.

After winning a classic junior race over 10 kilometers in Formazza in November 2018 , Vermeulen achieved his second victory in an FIS cross-country skiing competition in Villach at the end of December after switching to cross-country skiing. The Austrian won the race integrated in the Austria Cup against good international competition in front of Philipp Leodolter and Imanol Rojo . The Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2019 in Lahti , where the Styrian was able to establish himself in the top ten of the world's junior champions, were of outstanding importance for the assessment of his first cross-country skiing season . In a field of over 100 athletes, Vermeulen finished the 10-kilometer race in free technique in eighth place. However, he suffered a classic setback in the mass start over 30 kilometers. Although he calculated higher chances, it was only enough for 43rd place in the end. The highlight of his first season as a cross-country skier, however, was his participation in the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019 in his native Seefeld a few weeks later. There he started the mass start over 50 kilometers in free technique and was 56th among a field of 65 athletes be more than fifteen minutes behind. In the overall U20 Alpine Cup ranking, Vermeulen came in twelfth. At the end of the 2019 ski season, Vermeulen became club champion at WSV Ramsau for the first time, making him the third of the family after his mother Dorien (1995) and brother Moran (2016).

At the beginning of the 2019/20 winter season, at the prologue in Livigno , Vermeulen competed for the first time in a race as part of the Ski Classics , but with 64th place over 35 kilometers, he was only one last place. On December 20, 2019, Vermeulen made his debut in St. Ulrich am Pillersee in the men's second-class OPA Alpine Cup , but was classically disqualified over 15 km. A day later, he won his first points in the 10-kilometer freestyle in fifteenth. At the Austrian championships in February 2020, Vermeulen resisted the difficult conditions on a pure artificial snow trail best and won his first championship title over 15 km classic. The next day he also won the 10k freestyle pursuit. At the U23 cross-country world championships in Oberwiesenthal in March 2020, Vermeulen took 21st place over 15 km classic. In the mass start over 30 km freestyle, however, it was enough to finish 19th.

Cycling

In addition to Nordic skiing , Vermeulen also competed in international races as a cyclist. He completed his very first cycle racing season for the Graz Pushbikers WSA cycling team in the 2018 season. Vermeulen's goal was to improve his basic endurance. At the Romanian road bike race Tour of Bihor - Bellotto in 2018 he finished 52nd in the overall ranking and 20th among the juniors.
