The Milchwerke Berchtesgadener Land Chiemgau eG are a dairy operating under the brand name Berchtesgadener Land in the district of Berchtesgadener Land , based in Piding . The cooperative, which has existed since 1927, employs over 400 people and has an annual turnover of more than 200 million euros. In 2015, according to the Handelsblatt, 1,762 milk suppliers were affiliated with the cooperative , each of whom had an average of 23 cows in the barn. Of these, 296 were Naturland or Demeter certified organic farms. Since 2017, the cooperative can only supply milk to those who do not have glyphosate begins.

Since 2010, the dairy has only processed milk from GM-free cows. The total amount of milk is around 300 million kilograms per year, of which around 100 million kilograms are organic milk, which corresponds to an organic share of one third. For around a decade, it has offered members of the cooperative the highest organic milk prices.

The main products are mountain farmer's milk and the products made from it, as well as other organic milk products .

history

The Berchtesgadener Land dairy was founded in 1927 by 54 farmers in the region around Bad Reichenhall as an agricultural processing cooperative, who together delivered only 700 liters of milk per day, which corresponds to a little over 250,000 liters per year. In addition to the dairy, the subsidiary Molkerei-Vertrieb Piding eG was founded in 1964 . The dairy merged with the Chiemgau dairy in Truchtlaching in 1976 . Since then, the cooperative has been called Milchwerke Berchtesgadener Land Chiemgau eG , while the products are sold under the brand name "Berchtesgadener Land". The company's headquarters and only location that was expanded in 1990 and 1996 has been in Piding since 1986 .

Since 1973, the company has been the first dairy in Bavaria to collect and process "organic milk". In 1998 ten agricultural businesses from Schleching joined the Demeter cultivation association because the dairy agreed to purchase the milk produced in accordance with Demeter conditions with an organic surcharge. In 2006 1,825 farms delivered their milk to the cooperative, 296 of which were organic.

During the milk strike in 2008 , the dairy was the first to raise the price in June to the 43 cents per liter demanded by farmers. Although the company had to lower the price again in August, it still remained at the top of the German dairies. According to Bayerischer Rundfunk , the dairy paid 40 cents in 2016, the highest purchase price in Germany.

In 2010, according to the company, it was decided to feed exclusively GMO-free products and the milk delivery conditions were changed accordingly. In addition to the more than 400 organic farmers, all around 1,400 conventional member farms of the cooperative have now committed to feed the cows without genetic engineering with plants from the company's milk catchment area in the traditional way. In January 2010, organic milk products from the dairy were the first company in Germany to be certified according to the Naturland Fair guidelines. The products in question have since been marked with the Naturland Fair label.

When, by August 2015, the average milk price that producers received had fallen from 40.22 to just 28.78 cents per liter within 18 months, the dairy continued to pay 38 cents. As a result, around 800 farms applied for the company, which, however, only served around 1% of the total milk market.

In 2016, the Piding dairy sales department was renamed Frischdienst Berchtesgadener Land Chiemgau eG . This is located on the dairy premises. It supplies large consumers between the Inn and Salzach , Berchtesgaden and Altötting as well as in the neighboring Salzburger Land with its entire range of 1,600 products. Conversely, farmers from Austria are increasingly delivering their milk to Piding, as they get a higher price there. The milk is collected up to 1200 m above sea level.

In 2015, construction began on its own power plant to supply electricity and steam, which should go into operation at the end of 2016. The construction costs were estimated at 14 million euros. The extension of the administration building and a new milk dispensing hall were also under construction. Since 2017, the cooperative has been paying the affiliated companies an “animal welfare and pasture bonus”. According to the company, canteens from BMW , VW and Audi as well as Allianz insurance in Munich were acquired as new customers, and the drugstore chain dm was acquired as a new customer .

In 2015, the dairy was recognized by the Milk Industry Association (MIV) and the Central Association of German Dairy Farmers (ZDM) as the training company of the year 2015. In 2016 the cooperative received the German Sustainability Award , where it was among the five best in the category “Germany's most sustainable medium-sized companies 2016”.

In autumn 2017, the cooperative was the first large dairy in Germany to include a glyphosate ban in the conditions for its milk suppliers.

Sales development

Sales for the years 2003 to 2005 rose from 91.8 to 100.6 to 107.2 million euros. However, this meant that Milchwerke Berchtesgadener Land Chiemgau was far behind the two largest dairy cooperatives in Germany, Nordmilch and Humana Milchunion , which reported € 1946.5 million and € 2710 million, respectively. Sales have risen sharply since 2005, when the Milchwerke, after an increase of 9.7% over the previous year, stood at € 164.7 million. In 2006 the turnover was 132 million, in 2012 it was already 173 million, in 2013 it rose by over a fifth to 210 million, only to drop slightly in 2014 to 207 million and in 2015 to 205 million €. In 2016, sales rose again to € 217 million.

Workers

The more than 400 employees of the Milchwerke have not elected a works council. The company relies on its own model of co-determination.
