Miranda is a British sitcom on the BBC , developed by Miranda Hart , and in which she also plays the title role. The series is based on Hart's semi-autobiographical writing, followed by a television pilot and the radio comedy series Miranda Hart's Joke Shop on BBC Radio 2. Three seasons were produced between 2009 and 2013, a fourth was initially announced for 2015, but will ultimately not realized, even if some specials could not be ruled out. In an interview with BBC Radio 2, Miranda Hart announced that two Christmas specials will be shown in 2014 as a farewell to the series. The episodes I Do, But To Who? and The Final Curtain aired on December 25, 2014 and January 1, 2015.

In the UK, the first two seasons were shown on BBC Two and the third season on BBC One . For Germany, the Disney Channel secured the rights and showed the sitcom from October 22, 2014 to December 17, 2014 in double episodes in the evening program without interruption. The series was produced in HD and has been available in full in the USA on the Hulu video portal since August 2, 2014 .

Basics

In many episodes, Miranda tells about herself: Miranda is 1.85 meters tall and is often mistaken for a man. Relationships, especially with men, are very difficult for her.

She has a rather tense relationship with her mother, which is mainly due to the fact that her mother sees her as a great disappointment. This has to do with the fact that her mother is constantly trying to find a husband and a decent job for Miranda, which she constantly fails.

Although Miranda owns her own joke shop, her kindergarten friend Stevie Sutton takes over management, which Miranda understands little or nothing about. The restaurant next door is initially run by Clive Evans, in the third season he sells it to the chef Gary Preston.

After many unsuccessful dates between Miranda and Gary, they both decide to just be friends. Miranda starts dating local news anchor Michael Jackford when Gary has a friend named Rose.

characters

  • Miranda Hart is Miranda Preston (2009–2015) - a socially awkward woman in her thirties who often gets into bizarre situations. In the middle class, she seems out of place, despite her private school career, and decided to invest in a joke shop with her uncle's inheritance instead of doing a “normal” job. She is vehemently opposed to the potential partners who are constantly brought to her by her mother, family and friends. Miranda finds it difficult to cope with the everyday life of an adult and still has many childish traits (see: Fruit Friends ). She is appreciated by her friends and family for her open, down-to-earth manner. After Miranda learns Gary is at a wedding in The Final Curtain , she rushes there to prevent the worst. Arriving at the wedding, it turns out that Gary is only Clives' best man. Miranda and Gary then get married in the restaurant.
  • Tom Ellis is Gary Preston (2009–2015) - a handsome, ex-college friend of Miranda who now works as a cook. Although he is a little puzzled about Miranda's behavior at times, he likes Miranda as one of the few for who she is. In romantic situations, he also shares her insecurity. Gary is more self-confident and eloquent than Miranda, despite everything there are moments when he too does not know what to do and nervously tells untruths (see: Cliff and Richard ). After Gary becomes engaged to Miranda, Miranda is uncomfortable with Gary not saying I love you . When Miranda confronts Gary with this, he tells her that she needs to have more trust in him and that he cannot be with her like that. In the last episode, Miranda accepts herself as she is and the two marry.
  • Sarah Hadland is Stevie Sutton (2009-2015) - Miranda's sandpit friend, and her co-worker in the joke store, although Stevie is actually the one who is serious about the business. Stevie is more self-confident and more committed than Miranda, but in situations where Miranda acts childishly, Stevie also participates in childish behavior. Although she claims to have more chances with men (see: That certain something ), this impression is deceptive. Stevie dates the unkempt, unfriendly park ranger Norman (played by Joe Wilkinson ) in order to compete with Miranda. In the final episode, Norman appears again, Stevie kisses him.
  • Patricia Hodge is Penny (2009-2015) - Miranda's middle-class mother, whose job it is to impress her friends with events and their lives. Penny sees her main task in finding Miranda a decent job and a man for the future. She despairs of her daughter's decision to use her inheritance for a joke shop and often ignores Miranda's wishes in every respect. Although Penny often feels humiliated by Miranda, she tries everything to marry off her daughter. Every now and then she shows herself pleased about small successes in Miranda's life and underpins this with the words Los Miranda! (Originally: Go Miranda! ). In the final episode, Penny shows up at Miranda's apartment two days after the relationship between Miranda and Gary has ended and begins to think insensitively about a new bridegroom for Miranda, whereupon she stands up to Penny and throws her out of the apartment. Penny then begins to drink excess in the tennis club and realizes that there has been no sexual interest between her and Miranda's father for a long time, which she tried to ignore. She now appears again at Miranda and weeps on her daughter's shoulder, a few days later at Gary and Miranda's wedding, Miranda and Penny are finally reconciled.
  • Sally Phillips is Tilly (2009-2015) - an old school friend of Miranda who, unlike Miranda, has made something better of her life after private school and shows Penny above all everything that Miranda has never achieved. She often calls Miranda by her nickname from school days (see: Queen Kong ). Tilly tries constantly to give Miranda advice, but she refuses all of them. Even though she seems to be more confident than Miranda, she's no luckier with romances. Her former fiancé Rupert was more interested in Miranda than in Tilly and would like to start an affair with Miranda. In I Do, But To Who? she becomes engaged to her military friend, "Dreamboat" Charlie (played by Adrian Scarborough ).
  • James Holmes is Clive Evans (2009-2010, 2015) - In seasons 1 and 2 the owner of the restaurant where Gary works as a chef. Whenever he tries to help, he actually only makes it worse. So he reveals z. B. that Gary is having a secret marriage, thereby hurting Miranda. In season 3, he sells the restaurant to Gary. In the final episode, The Final Curtain , he married regular customer Jim from Miranda's joke store (played by Dominic Coleman ).
  • Bo Poraj is Michael Jackford (2012-2014) - Miranda's friend from season 3, who works as a television reporter and loves Miranda for who she is. Michael did in I Do, But To Who? his last appearance when Miranda chooses Gary. Michael then continues the trip to Africa, which he had previously broken off in favor of Miranda.
  • Naomi Bentley is Rose (2013) - Gary's friend in season 3. When Rose cannot accept Gary's affection for Miranda in the past, Gary breaks up with her. Her last appearance was in Three Little Words (S03E05) for the reopening of the restaurant, when Miranda was revealing her true feelings to Gary, and Rose ran away.

Trivia

General

  • The set used for the joke shop was previously part of the set of the sitcom Absolutely Fabulous - also produced by the BBC - and served as a set for the kitchen. The staircase, which was already used as an entry and exit at Absolutely Fabulous, is distinctive.

Running gags

  • Each episode begins with a monologue by Miranda. She speaks and looks at the audience. Even during the broadcast, the fourth wall is almost always broken by Miranda. In the episode The Psychologist (S02E05) Penny breaks the fourth wall when she and Miranda switch roles and Penny parodies Miranda. Miranda also looks astonished into the camera in the following shot.
  • In each episode there are flashbacks and ideas of Miranda's thoughts.
  • As soon as Miranda is a little uncomfortable, she quickly starts making up stories about her life.
  • Both Orlando Bloom and Cliff Richard are mentioned when Miranda (and, in his second case, Gary) is asked about their children. Miranda Gary replies in I'm not a man (S01E01), she has two sons named Orlando and Bloom. In Crazy Vacation (S01E04), Miranda and Gary tell a customer their kids are called Cliff and Richard. It is also worth mentioning that both should be called Richards with the surname (i.e. Cliff Richards and Richard Richards).
  • Miranda shows her singing talent at its best in every episode .
  • Stevie loves to parody the British soul singer Heather Small . She holds a mask with Heather's face in front of her own face and sings the chorus of Proud ( What have you done today to make you feel proud? ) In a disguised voice. Small makes a cameo in the episode The Final Curtain and sings Proud.
  • In every episode, Penny mentions the half-sentence as such fun (in the original: such fun ). When she mentions things, buildings, people, circumstances or the like, she uses what I call it ... (in the original: what i call ) in front of it, to which Miranda replies that she is not the only one who has these objects etc. would call.
  • Miranda is known for her falls. So it often falls z. B. on your own feet, in the way cardboard boxes or on the previously overturned clothes rack in the restaurant. Furthermore, Miranda often exposes herself in public, in which she loses her pants or top, usually under funny circumstances.
  • In three episodes, Penny gives Miranda advice on upcoming formal conversations. This also explains the correct form of laughing to Miranda. In Dogs (S01E06) laughter is based on the song Barbie Girl by the Danish band Aqua , in Die Patentante (S02E02) on the hit Poker Face by the singer Lady Gaga . In Miranda cop (S03E02) is Price Tag by Jessie J as a template. It is also worth mentioning that in the original sound, both Lady Gaga and Jessie J are incorrectly pronounced or named by Penny. So she calls the former Lady Gagá and the latter Jessica J.
  • Whenever Tilly's cell phone rings during a conversation and she receives a message, she interrupts the conversation by lifting her index finger and holding the other callers in silence for a moment (in the original: bear with ) until she is back (in Original: back ).
  • Tilly often has the urge to belittle everything (see: diminutive ). The term miracle bear (in the original: marvilisimous ) is often used by Tilly.
  • Miranda is called Queen Kong by Tilly, Katy and other former classmates . Why this is the case has not been conclusively clarified. It is possible that Queen Kong as the counterpart of King Kong is alluding to Miranda's loneliness and supernatural greatness.
  • It often happens that Miranda pushes Stevie away with her arm, causing the latter to go down. This happens especially when Stevie talks badly of Miranda in the presence of potential flirters like Gary.
  • Chris and Allison, a couple and friends of Gary, are constantly flirting, which drives Miranda crazy. So the two often say the same thing and are always overly friendly, which Miranda underpins negatively with eye rolls and pejorative looks at the audience. Only when they both had their first baby and Allison is pregnant again does this change. So both are rather annoyed that they say the same thing and also no longer address each other with their nickname, but their first name. In addition, both are no longer overly friendly.
  • If Miranda finds a word strange, she says this to her counterpart and pronounces it several times in clearly exaggerated terms.
  • In The Low Point (S02E04) and The Agony of Choice (S03E06) there is a game called Where's Miranda? to see. This is a reference to a children's book series called Where's Walter?
  • Penny keeps telling Miranda about the sex games with her husband, which clearly bothers Miranda and regularly upsets her.
  • As soon as Miranda wants to tell Stevie something exciting, Miranda gallops into the store and repeats the name of her best friend with Stevie, Stevie, Stevie ... all the time. In other ways too, Miranda gallops around instead of running.
  • Penny is known for mistaking it while gossiping the actual mean remark softly instead of loudly. The actual insult is pronounced loud instead of softly according to the characteristics mentioned, whereas the neutral or slightly derogatory characteristics are expressed softly instead of loudly.
  • When Miranda and Stevie argue, do they both hang on to their sentences or what? (in the original: are we? ). This is slightly modified and used again and again in several episodes and leads to the fact that the disputes tend to escalate, because both see a competition in the other with or what? to outdo.
  • In several episodes, Miranda has fruit friends to talk to. Her friends think this is a little strange.
  • Stevie often mentions a certain something (in the original: the allure ) with potential partners Miranda that Miranda would be missing.
  • Miranda fails to speak the word sex openly. Only in the final episode, The Final Curtain, does she manage to do this, which visibly irritates her friends and family. Other behaviors typical for Miranda, such as living with fruit friends or being childish, are also dropped in the last episode, whereupon a psychiatrist is called for Miranda.
  • Penny often mentions her rival Belinda from the tennis club, who tries to outdo Penny with events and parties, but she rarely succeeds.
  • Penny often tries to pair Miranda with Benjy, whereupon Miranda replies that she won't do anything with her first cousin.
  • Clamp a customer, the Stevie and Miranda in Miranda's problems and follows them to the restaurant or Miranda's apartment, in the same phenomenon occurs in three episodes ( Verkupplungsversuche (S01E05) Three little words (S03E05) The Final Curtain ). Only in the last episode does it become known that the customer's first name is Jim. Before he was only known as a customer and when asked who he was, everyone (including him) said they did not know.
  • Three teenagers, mostly African-Americans, appear in multiple episodes. Above all, Miranda complains about wearing the pants, as they hang well below the hips. This culminates in the episode The Spoiled for Choice (S03E06), when Miranda and Gary flee from three teenagers at the train station and Miranda replies to Gary's advice that she should hurry up and that the teenagers are because of their low-hanging pants could not run fast.
  • In two episodes ( Crazy Vacation (S01E04) and The Agony of Choice (S03E06)) Miranda tells her friends that she is traveling far away. However, both times she moves into a room at the Hamilton Lodge across the street.
