Murray Matheson

Murray Matheson (born July 1, 1912 in Casterton , Victoria , † April 25, 1985 in Woodland Hills , Los Angeles , California ) was an Australian actor .

Life

After training as an actor at the theater in Australia and his first appearances in Melbourne in 1933 and touring Australia, Matheson moved to England in 1935 , where he made his debut on the stages of London in 1937 . Tours with productions by Oscar Wilde and Candida followed ; In 1939 he played at the London Palladium . During World War II , Matheson served in the Royal Air Force from 1940 to 1945 and then worked for the British Embassy in Moscow . After a few appearances in British films, he moved to the United States; there he first appeared on the Broadway stage in 1950 . Two years later he made his Hollywood debut, in the same year he played his first major Hollywood role in John Farrow's The Ship of the Condemned alongside Alan Ladd and James Mason . He also took on other roles in All Glory on Earth and Assault on Queen Mary .

Matheson had a decades-long career in US television and guest roles in numerous successful series productions. He has been involved in more than 130 different productions. The German-speaking audience could see him from 1973 in the crime series Banacek broadcast on ARD as bookseller Felix Mulholland at the side of George Peppard . Matheson played his last film role in the episode film Unheimliche Schattenlichter in the second episode, directed and produced by Steven Spielberg .

Matheson died of heart failure at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills.
