Muschi ( Russian Мужи , wis. Transliteration Muži ) is a larger village (selo) within the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in northern Western Siberia ( Russia ), around 100 km southwest of the district capital Salekhard . It has 3609 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
history
The place emerged around 1840 as a small settlement point in the area traditionally populated by pagan chants , founded by Christian settlers from more southern areas of the Russian Empire . In the same year a wooden church was built there. The main mission of the settlers was to convert the indigenous people to Christianity . The place name was taken from the language of the Chanten , where it means something like "water that never stops". Towards the end of the 19th century, around 20 nomads from the Nenets lived in the village , who mainly farmed reindeer .
At the beginning of the 20th century, Muschi was considered a relatively prosperous place, in which there was a lot of trade. The goods were shipped across the Malaja Ob river , on which the village is located. The total population in 1909 was 465, by 1925 this number had already increased to over 1,300.
In 1930 Muschi was raised to the administrative center of the Shuryschkarsky Rajon , which in turn has been part of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug since 1937.
Today Muschi is also the center of the rural community of the same name (Selskoje posselenije) , to which the villages of Anzhigort, Khantymuschi, Ilyagort and Nowy Kijewat belong.
