NGC 5284 is most likely an accidental overconcentration of some stars that can give the impression of the remnants of a star cluster. The object, located in the Centaurus constellation , was observed and described by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope in 1837 , which later made it into the New General Catalog (NGC).
