NGC 5305 is a 13.6 mag barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Hounds . It is an estimated 256 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered on March 17, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "vF, S, iR, confirmed with 300 power".
